THURSDAY, OCT. 3, 1935 NUMBER FIFTEEN Merchants To Give Car -O —, MONTH OF BARGAINS TO BEGIN Will End Nov! 14 with^ Big Celebration and ' Prize Giving Monday, October 14th, is the date set by the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Associa tion to begin the Greater Roanoke Rapids Trade Days which will last for a month. During that month, the members of the Association will offer to the buying pub lic the biggest selections and greatest values to be found in this section of the United States. They have been stocking up in order to meet the increased demand that is expected during the Trade Days. Special prices will be given in order to attract the most discerning purchaser. Clothing stores, grocery stores, drug stroes, electrical stores, service stations, fur niture stores, jewelry stores and others, who are Associa tion members, have joined together in featuring specials that will draw and which will be advertised during the month in this newspaper. To close the month, the merchants and other partici pating firms have combined and bought three splendid, expensive prizes. The first prize is a Chevrolet 2-door sedan which is now on dis play at Tri-City Motor Co. Second prize is a $100 bed room suite at Shell Furn. Co. Third prize is a $76 Zenith radio (battery set if neces sary) on display at E. W. Smith’s. The program will be under the direction of the Literature and Fine Arts De partment and they have selected as speaker for the after noon, Rev. Lawrence Stell. There will also be vocal and instrumental music. The meeting is at three o’clock. Re member to bring a new member with you. -0 HANOVER, N. H. - For a time there were visions of a re vival of the civil war but it all ended peacefully. Two fresh men, assigned as roommates when Dartmouth College began its year, started out, as usual, to get acquainted. “My name’s Lee,” volunteered one. “Mine’s Grant,” replied the other. Then they went into details. The former is L. Van dergrift Lee, great grandson of a first cousin of the famed confederate general. And the other is Charles S. Grant, a great grandson of a cousin of the Union Army’s Gen. Grant. Both live in Washington, D. C. Stevenson On Way to Detroit NEWSOME BETTER ■-0 Elton Outland of Woodland Seriously Injured; May Not Recover FUNERAL TOMORROW The body of Cecil M. Stevenson arrived here from Fremont, Ohio, at 11 o’clock tonight and was taken to the residence in I Jackson where the funeral will be held Friday after* noon at 2 o’clock at the Jackson Baptist Church. Cecil M. Stevenson of Jack son was instantly killed, El ton Outland, of Woodland was seriously in jured and Major C. New some of Roanoke Rapids suf fered a broken jaw in an au tomobile accident near Fre mont, Ohio, Tuesday . night The three men were on their way to Detroit for the World Series. The two injured men were brought to a hospital in Fre mont where it was found Outland was suffering from a fractured skull and may die. His condition was de scribed today as very serious. Major Newsome had a broken jaw and was bruised but suffered no internal in juries. Mrs. Newsome, who left Roanoke Rapids early Wednesday morning with M. C. Newsome Jr., Mrs. Out land, and Outland’s sister, Mrs. Brown of Woodland, phoned relatives at 4 w-m, this morning that Mr. New some was resting comfort ab»y and would recover from his injuries. T. W.
