This company of five artists opens the Festival with their happy interpretation of popular and classical operatic music. They make music live in memorable excerpts from “The Bohemian Girl,” “Faust,” “Pinafore,” “Chimes of Normandie,” “No, No, Nannette” and “Of Thee I Sing.” Mr. William Davies directs the company and the personnel has remained i.itact for several years. It includes Miss Ruth Dennen, soprano; Miss Virginia Auyer, contralto; Mr. C. Van Buskirk, basso; and Miss Marie Adolph, pianist. UP AND DOWN WITH THB Ghe Avenue SdMo* SOMEBODY’S full grown police dog is in the Roanoke Rap ids Hospital, not as a patient exactly, altho he is probably suffering from a slight attack of homesickness. He is being fed by hospital attendants. The dog came to the hospital some time Sunday. It b thought he followed his folks there and became separated from them. HONOR Certificate from National Red Cross headquarters has been received by Rev. Gordon L. Price, chairman of the Roanoke Rapids Chapter of the American Red Cross. Ac cording to the Field Representative, in the last Roll Call, Roanoke Rapids Chapter showed the largest percentage of increase of any chapter in the State of North Carolina. WOMANS CLUB TO SPONSOR -0 The Womans Club of Roanoke Rapids will sponsor the Collins Festival, a series of entertain ments, one a week starting with Tuesday, Jan. 14th. The programs will be held at the High School auditorium. Season tickets for the four pro grams, one each Tuesday night, are now on sale at a substantial saving over individual tickets. Wholesome entertainment of a high type, but not “high-brow”, is the reputation of the Festival, which opens the night of Jan. 14th with the Davies Light Opera Co. On the night of Jan. 21 will be presented the Lucille Elmore Re vue. For the third week, on the night of Jan. 28th, Frank P. John son will headline the program. The final program of the series on the night of Feb. 4th will pre sent the play, “Paupers and Pews”. -- PENSION MONEY IS WAITING Anyone knowing the wherea bouts of Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Jenkins and Mrs. Lucy Jane Mas sey are asked to have them get in touch with Clerk A. L. Hux at Halifax. He is holding pension warrants for them but has been unable to locate them. Mr. Hux has been very active in getting pensions for widows in the county and has been able to put several on the rolls. These two are Confederate Veterans’ widows and the warrants have not yet been called for. Friends or relatives of the two widows should act quickly as the warrants must be returned to Raleigh if not call ed for in a specified time. -o Mrs. Sallie Joyner, 55, died De cember 24th of cerebral hemor rhage at her home in Hornertown. She fell dead instantly and Coro ner Cooper was called to investi gate, pronouncing it death from natural causes. Funeral services were held at Williams Funeral Home Dec. 27th with interment in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. ELABORATE PLANS FOR JACKSON DAY DINNER BEING MADE Democrats of four counties will meet at Halifax on next Wednesday night for the annual Jackson Day Dinner which will usher in the opening of the 1936 Presidential campaign and be featured by a radio address by President Roosevelt. Counties taking part in the Halifax Dinner will be Halifax, Northampton, Warren and Bertie counties. CUMBA -o After leading local police a chase all over this section, Clyde Cumba, Bad Boy of Roanoke Rap ids, has been captured. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Chief of Police Early and Officer Green. With his arrest, all the house breaking in Patterson Mill village is solved. Cumba, who will not be 17 until next month, admits four burglaries and one car theft. The four houses he entered was at night with occupants sleeping there and for these charges he faces capital punishment. Of ficials believe he will enter a plea of second degree burglary, which may be accepted on account of his youth. The penalty for this is 30 years in prison. The arrest Tuesday was made at Enfield after a chase over the county. Since leaving a stolen car in Norfolk, the boy says he hitch hiked to Florida and then got a ride back on a fruit truck to Pe tersburg. Monday afternoon, he was seen here by Charley Hale, one of his victims, who reported to the police. Cumba left the truck and went to Weldon, where with his usual “nerve” he spent the night with (Continued on Back Page) -o Sister’s Funeral In Gordonsville Today B Dr. John W. Martin left last night and A. N. Martin left this morning for Gordonsville, Va. to attend the funeral of their sister, Mrs. Belle Coffman, who died Tuesday. The funeral was this afternoon with interment in Gor donsville. Elaborate plans are being made to feed the 150 loyal Democrats who are expected to arrive in Hal ifax Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Local speakers will be Solicitor W. H. S. Burgwyn of Jackson and Senator Julian R. Allsbrook of Roanoke Rapids. Leaders of War ren and Bertie counties will also be called on. At 9:45, radios installed in the building will be tuned in on the Washington, D. C. dinner, from which President Roosevelt will address the Democrats of the na tion. The dinner at Halifax will be in the Womans Club building and will be served by the County Home Demonstration Clubs under the supervision of Mrs. Hazel Wheeler. Sixty Dinners will be held at the same time in the State. In th’s 2nd Congressional District, the other dinners will be at Wilson and Kinston, for Edgecombe, Wil son, Green and Lenoir counties. Congressman Kerr will attend .the Dinner in Washington, D. C. His son, John H. Kerr Jr., will head a delegation from Warren County which is coming to the Halifax Dinner. Tickets are being sold for the Dinner and are now in the hands of county precinct chairmen. Reservations should be made at once so it will be known by the end of the week how many to ex pect. The entire proceeds of the ticket sale goes as each Demo crat’s donation to the National Democratic Committee and will be listed separately in the Washing ton office. Assisting C. L. Wilson, 2nd Dis trict Chairman, are all the Dem ocratic County Chairmen, and special chairmen as follows: A. L. Hux, Halifax County; Archie Gay, Northampton County; John H. Kerr Jr., Warren County; Will Clark Jr., Edgecombe County; Larry Moore Jr., Wilson County; Phil Crawford Jr., Lenoir County. All Democrats are invited to attend the Dinner and an extra ef fort is being made to make the one at Halifax one of the largest in the State.
