C. ^ THURSDAY, MAR. 12, 1930 NUMBER THIRTY-SEVEN it 4 OUT FOR JOB OF HI SHERIFF -o Four men are now running for the job of High Sheriff of Hali fax County, three of them an nouncing yesterday since the news was out that Shreiff G. H. Johnson would not run again. Those announcing yesterday were Joe L. Riddick of Scotland Neck, Harry A. House of Thelma and Clyde H. Madry of Enfield. S. M. Thompson of Roanoke Rap ids announced over two weeks a go. The new entries in the field in clude two deputy sheriffs. Mr. Riddick has been deputy sheriff and tax collector for the last five years and says he is running on that record. He is 42 years old and has lived in Scotland Neck all his life. He is a World War veteran. Mr. Riddick was in Roa noke Rapids in 1929 when his brother, Hubert, had the Buick a gency here. Mr. House, who is 45 years old, has been a deputy sheriff for 19 y^ars. He has served all c.f Sheriff Johnson’s term and also under his uncle, old Sheriff J. A. House. He is a native of Thelma and says he wants it understood he has always voted the Demo cratic ticket. Mr. Madry is 32 years old and has been a resident of Enfield for the past 13 years. He was born in Scotland Neck where his father, J. H. Madry, now lives. The Primary election is on Sat urday, June 6th. Narrowly Escapes Serious Injuries Little Aleta Neal Allsbrook, af fectionately known to her many friends as “Punkin,” 3 Vi-year-old daughter of Atty. and Mrs. W. B. Allsbrook, of this city, is today little the worse for a Sunday joy ' ride that almost took on serious consequences when she fell from the back seat of a 4-door sedan in which the family was enroute to Scotland Neck to spend the day with Mr. Allsbrook’s parents last Snnday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Allsbrook were riding in the front seat of the (Continued on Back Page) Minstrel Matinee 1:30 P. M. Friday Spoke Tonight Raleigh, March 9. - Over a state-wide radio network A. H. (“Sandy”) Graham, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor, spoke to the people of North Carolina tonight from 8.30 to 9.00 o’clock. Mr. Graham in this state-wide address gave his views on the im portant problems of State govern ment which affect every citizen, such as public schools, roads, old age pensions, control of alcoholic beverages, the sales tax, and State finances. -o Performance On Friday Afternoon For School Kids -0 For the first time, the Kiwanis Minstrel-Revue will have a mati nee performance for grade school children only on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. A special price of 10 cents for grade school children will be made. Adults will pay regular night prices, as well as High School pupils, for the matinee. It has long been the desire of the club to stage the show for the school children and for those a dults who must work Friday nights. This year it will be done and it will also serve as a final dress rehearsal for the big show which starts at 8 p.m. Due to the matinee, there will be no parade Friday afternoon, but a few numbers were given at High School assembly Thursday afternoon. -o PLAN RAT KILLING CAMPAIGN At the monthly meeting of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Asso ciation this afternoon plans were laid for a city-wide rat killing campaign, with the government furnishing a supervisor, the city furnishing the labor and the As sociation the poison. A Farmers’ Trade and Swap Day will also be held in the near future with a committee appoint ed to work up the details and the Association furnishing an auc tioneer. Another committee was ap pointed to help work out a rural free delivery route into North ampton County. City officials were present to hear complaints against peddlers. Hearing Before Highway Board On March 18th Stop Work On Road To Littleton To Get Permanent Road Work on Highway 158 between Roanoke Rapids and Littleton has been halted until a delegation'Of citizens from those cities can ap pear before the State Highway Commission on March 18th to de mand a permanent surface in stead of the same type surface now used. All citizens interested are ask ed to be in Raleigh on Wednes day, March 18th, for the purpose of showing the Commission how foolish it is to waste more money in putting down the same type road used in the past and to de mand a concrete surface. A delegation of Littleton citi zens came here Tuesday after noon to meet with representatives of the city government and va rious civic clubs. W. A. Thorne acted as chairman and Senator J. R. Allsbrook told of his con versations with Capus Waynick, chairman of hte State Highway Commission. Mr. Allsbrook sug gested the delegation to Raleigh. Every person present spoke his sentiments and it was the unani mous opinion that it was “con crete or nothing”. Resolutions were adopted which are printed below. Those present from Littleton were Joe Wollett, Paul Johnston, William Alston, G. T. Vick, Joseph P. Pippen, J. H. Newsome, G. S. May, Jack Johnston and G. Harold Myrick. From Roanoke Rapids were C. A. Throne, Byron Gurley, Bernard Allsbrook, Ed ^win Akers. Following are the resolutions: NORTH CAROLINA, HALIFAX COUNTY. To Capus M. Waynick, Chair man, North Carolina State High way Commission: We, the citizens, organizations and business interests of Roanoke a Rapids and Littleton at a meeting held in Roanoke Rapids on March 10, 1936, adopted the following preambles and resolutions: WHEREAS, the condition of Highway No. 158 between Roa noke Rapids and Littleton is such 5s to make it necessary for the Highway Commission to close a portion thereof in order to repair and reconstruct the same; and WHEREAS, the condition of said road was brought about by reason of the fact that the mate rial used in its construction was not sufficiently durable to prop erly and satisfactorily take care of the volume and type of traf fic to which it is constantly sub jected; and WHEREAS, said road has been closed for the purpose of repair and construction with practically the same type of material as was used in the construction of the surface formerly used, which has almost entirely given away and lesulted in its present condition* and WHEREAS, your petitioners desire that further work on said road be temporarily suspended until a delegation representing citizens, organizations and busi ness interests of the communities served by said road can be heard by the North Carolina State High way Commission. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the North Caro lina State Highway Commission be requested and urged to tempo rarily suspend reconstruction of said highway No. 158 between Roanoke Rapids and Littleton un til such time as a hearing can be had before said Commission rel ative to the construction of a concrete road which, in the opin ion of your petitioners, is the only type road which will properly and satisfactorily withstand the vol ume and type of traffic to which said road is constantly subjected.
