Wilder, local WPA vyorker, suffered a. broken pelvis and _ possible internal injuries when he darted in front of'an au tomobile driven by Mrs. ’ Helen Moored in the 200 blo<;k on Roanoke Avenue at 8 o’clock tonight. Eye witnesses say the accident was unavoidable, so far as the driver of the car is concerned. The child’s parent? live over B. S. Webb’s Furniture S'iore in the North-ward business section. The child, evidently at play, crossed the street directly in front of the car, driven by Mrs. Moore at what witnesses say was a very nomi nal rate of speed. Cars were (Continued on Back Page) SOFTBALL SEASON OPENS The official leagues of the Softball teams of Roanoke Rapids, with more than 150 players, open their season next Monday on four parks in this city. iAt top is the Rosemary Mfg. McDonald EXPECT LARGE CROWD -o Dr. Ralph McDonald, Democrat ic nominee for Governor, will speak to the voters of this sec tion at the Roanoke Rapids High School auditorium at 8 p.m. this Friday night. A large crowd from this section of the State is ex pected here. The-speaker will be-introduced by Bernard Allsbrook, local attor ney. On the stage with the speak er v ill be the executive committee of the Halifax County Fair Tax League, which has endorsed Dr. McDonald for Governor, and the directors of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association. A month ago, Dr. McDonald was the speak er at the annual meeting of the Association. -o William Harris, II transacted business in Suffolk, Ya. Tuesday. NO RACE IN CITY -o Filing time for possible candi dates for the City Board of Com missioners closed Tuesday, mid night with oniy the present mem bers filing. Those v ho will run without opposition are F. C. Wil liams in the North Ward and E. B. Manning in the South Ward. The election on May 5th will be, therefore, only a matter of form. __n MRS JOHN STADLER FUNERAL -O Funeral Services Held Here Yesterday; Daughter of George Fisher -o Funeral services were held in Roanoke Rapids Wednesday, April 15th, for Mrs. John Stadler, whose sudden death in Martinsville, Va., Monday, came as a shock to her many friends here. Mrs. Stadler was formerly Miss Mildred Fish er, and _was born and reared in Roanoke Rapids.
