JAX LICK ELIZABETH CITY AND PORTSMOUTH 1 V ■ 1 - With only three veterans back from last season’s state title team Coach Hoyle has whipped six re serves into varsity men and the lads are doing fine waving the Jacket colors this year. Also a few of the graduated Jackets are doing well on various state teams. Geo. Nethercutt, last year’s var sity catcher, is doing the back stopping for the Carolina Frosh and slapping the agate. Ollie A cree, last year’s star hurler, was hitting the pill at a 333 clip at Guilford College up until a week ago when injuries benched him. Also word comes from out Ala bama way that “Red” Miller, fiery tobacco spitter who handled the Jackets’ second base, is getting a long on the down home team. Ir win Dickens, heavy hitting Wake Forest shortstop, plays here Sat urday. Coach Hoyle s boys have won six consecutive games since dropping that heart-breaking five-inning game to Edenton 4-5 in their ini tial fray. Upsetting advance dope the Jax went wild here last Sat urday with the fine hurling of Ir vin Byrd, who yielded only six hits to whitewash the visiting Woodrow Wilson highs of Ports mouth 5-0. Byrd also collected 3 hits and didn’t let the Virginia team come close to scoring. Their only threat was in the seventh when Archer, second baseman, hit a double and went to third on a fielder’s choice then Byrd fan ned two to retire their side. Speed Boyd got two doubles and two singles for six trips and Joe Brown hit a triple and single to pace the locals’ stick work. Hand some “Flash” Newsome almost caught a fast pitch for a homer over the left field wall but lady luck wasn’t with him and the Portsmouth leftfielder pulled a spectacular catch to snag the drive out of the air. The Jax w'hipped Wilson 6-5 last year. The locals went to top flight in first district running with Eden ton by taking Elizabeth City for a second defeat here Tuesday aft ernoon 5-4. Garris started on the mound but gave up to Boyd in the fourth. Elizabeth City got hot in the third and sent home three runs while Roanoke Rapids scored two in their half. The visitors added another in the fifth frame but the Jax tied up the score in the same inning then came back in the eighth to win the game when Boyd singled and Smith lac ed out a two bagger to score the fifth run. Boyd had a perfect day at bat by clouting a triple, double, and two singles in four trips. Joe Brown and Jack Smith came in for their share of honors by hit ting a double and single each. Crank and Caddy hit twice each for the visitors’ leading batters. The Jax collected nine hits and errored five times while Elizabeth City got seven hits and miscued twice. Byrd, who has turned in three shut-out games will probably see action against Edenton at Wil liamston today in a game that will determine First District cham pions. Boyd or Garris will hurl against Wake Forest Frosh here Saturday. The tentative line-up for Saturday: Boyd, pitch., New some lb, Starke 2b, Midgett c. Brown ss, Butler 3b, Garris If, Byrd cf, Smith rf. Come out and support your high school team Saturday and give Litle Dickens a big hand. Proceeds go to bet terment of your community. -o Mrs. Molly Woodruff, Plummia Woodruff, gam Woodruff spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Camp near Garysburg. Mr. and Mrs. J. A.
