The County Executive Commit tee, consisting of the precinct chairmen, unanimously re-elected Dr. John W. Martin of Roanoke Rapids as County Chairman to serve for the next two years. Mrs. Anne Kitchin Travis of Scotland Neck was elected Vice Chairman. Irvin Clark of Scotland Neck was elected chairman of the con vention and presided at the de liberations of the meeting. ALL MUST REGISTER TO VOTE All qualified voters in Halifax County must be on the new regis tration books by sunset this Sat urday in order to vote in the pri mary election on June 6th. The books have now been since May 9th and this will be the third Saturday they have been o pen. Those who have not regis tered should do so at once if they wish to vote in this and coming elections for county, State and Na tional offices. The books close for this year at sunset Saturday. Next Saturday, May 30th, is challenge day, when any voter may challenge the right of any other voter to participate in the party primaries. Two weeks from Saturday is election day, June 6th. Several facts of interest have developed during the new regis tration. The four precincts in Roanoke Rapids had registered ap proximately 4,000 voters yester day. The question of age has a risen. It is the law that any per son who will be 21 years old for the November general election may participate in the party primary in June. So persons who will be 21 before November may register and vote in the primary alt|io they are not yet 21. Another interesting question is that of how to register your party affiliation. All persons may vote in the general elections in the fall, which is between parties. But for the primary elections in June, voters will receive the ballots of only of that party under which they register. Several are registering as Inde pendents. By so doing they be come members of the Independent rarty. it does not mean they can vote as they wish in the primary. If their party (Independent) has no primary election on, they get no vote. They cannot vote in the Democratic or Republican pri maries. So far as Halifax Coun ty is concerned, anyone register ing as Independent might just as well not register so far as the June primary is concerned. They cannot vote. A lot of people get the idea that registering Independent is like an Independent newspaper. You can write for either party. This is not the ease in voting. A few seem to think the label “Indepen dent Newspaper” means a lot. It (Continued on Page 2)
