To the Voters of North Carolina: Five Constitutional Amendments are to be voted on November 3. No. 1 relates to the Supreme Court, but Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 relate to taxation. They will be numbered on the ballot as follows: No. 2. Permitting a tax exemp tion on homes up to $1,000 (the Legislature deciding the amount). No. 3. Permitting classification of property (if and when the Leg islature decides it wise). No. 4. Authorizing a higher tax on great incomes (but not to ex ceed 10%). No. 5. Preventing increase in *' public debt except by vote of the people. Memorial Service For Miss Long A most impressive memorial service was held at Black Creek, seven miles from Wilson Sunday afternoon, at the school auditori um in loving tribute to Miss Ed na Long of Seaboard whose death occurred at Rocky Mount Hospi tal following an operation June 16. This service was arranged by the people in the community be cause of their love and apprecia tion for Miss Long’s untiring ser vice and devotion as a school teacher in their community for thirteen years. She had endeared herself to a host of friends as was manifested by the large attend ance at the service. Dr. Hugh A. Ellis of Wilson led the prayer, an address was given by Rev. John Barclay of Wilson and Rev. E. R. Shuler of Fre mont closed with a short talk . All members of the immediate family were present besides a host of friend3 from neighboring cities. Miss Long who had many friends in this city will be remembered as a sister of Mrs. Thurman Bullock. P. Moore, Post Ad jutant. Under provisions from State and Federal aid, all children and adults so desiring will receive free treatment at the Crippled Clinics held in Roanoke Rapids every month. In the past, those able to pay could be charged but now the clinic is free to all persons. Unless more persons from Roanoke Rap ids and Halifax County are found who need treat ment, the clinic may be discontinued. County Health Officer McGeachey reported tonight that the number of crippled in this county was far be low the average. The five amendments to the State constitu tion were discussed tonight by J. R. Allsbrook at the regular weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club. These proposed amendments will be voted on next Tuesday. They are to increase the number of Su preme Court judges from five to seven, increase income tax maximum from 6 to 10 per cent, classi fication of property for taxation, exemption on homesteads lived in up to $1,000, debt limitation on State and municipalities. In Raleigh yesterday a marriage license was issued to Thomas Nowell Adams Jr. of Roanoke Rapids and Annie Marie Turner of Raleigh.— WPTF of Raleigh received permission yesterday to broadcast the election returns on the night of November 3rd.—When buying in Roanoke Rapids, ask for your Trade Tickets. A Durham woman won $150,000 on the Irish Sweepstakes this week.— City police report a noticeable increase in the sale of dog tags since the little slips went out last week summoning to the Mayor’s Court next Mon day all dogowners who had failed to buy tags. The total today sold is about 320, which is about the number sold last year. Police will make a check up soon, looking particularly for those “dead dogs” of owners who returned their slips with the report their dog was dead or about to be dead, y A call for an ambulance came Saturday night from Shaw’s Filling Station on the Littleton Road, reporting an auto wreck near there in which sev eral Negroes were supposed to have been hurt. When the ambulance arrived, it was discovered they were suffering from too much drink more than anything else.
