Roanoke Rapids’ four precincts 15
to 1 when he received 3,272 votes
to 199 for his Republican opponent
Landon in Tuesday’s election.

County Tuesday, with Democratic
nominees unopposed, ran from 750
to 1,000 behind the Presidential
ballot, with Joe L Riddick, sherifff
elect, leading the ballot. Riddick
polled 7,800 complimentary vote#.

IN THE CITY
Clyde R. Hoey carried Roanoke
Rapids by a vote of 3 to 1 Tues
day over his Republican opponent,
Gilliam Grissom. The final vote
in the four precincts was Hoey 2,
350 and Grissom 876.
There were 245 persons who vot
ed in the Presidential race who did
not vote in the State race. Hoey
ran almost one thousand behind
President Roosevelt who received
3,272 Roanoke Rapids votes and If d
the tickets in all races. Other
Democratic nominees for State of
fices ran along with Mr. Hoey.

OF BOARD BALLOT
Robert Cleaton led his ticket in Tuesday election when the three
members of the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District Board, nominated in
the June primary, ran without opposition in the general election. M. H.
Hedgepeth ran secpnd and Dr. YV. E. Murphrey, who was made chair
man of the Board and who ran on a cut-the-water-rate platform in
June, was third Tuesday. The district vote in the three precincts was
the lowest cast. Over 500 persons cast their votes in the Presidential
race but did not vote their Sanitary District ballots. Cleaton led with
2435, Hedgepeth 2341, Murphrey 23 26. The vote by precincts:

CARRIED HERE 3RD
The five amendments to the State constitution, voted on by North
Carolina Tuesday, carried by substantial majorities in Roanoke Rapids.
Amendment No. 1 was to the Judicial Section, increasing the number of
State Supreme Court judges. No. 2 was for exemption on homes up to
$1,000. No. 3 was for classification of property. No. 4 was for increas
ing income tax limitation to 10 per cent. No. 5 was for limitations upon
increase of public debt. The vote in the four Roanoke Rapids precincts

HALIFAX COUNTY
The five amendments to the
State constitution, voted on Tues
day, carried in Halifax County by
margins of two and a half and
three to one. Weldon voted against
Nos. 2, 3 and 4 and Littleton voted
No majorities on all five. Other
county precincts returned majori
ties for all five. The county vote:
Amendment No. 1 to the Judicial
Section, increasing the number of
State Supreme Court members;
Yes 4,110, No 1,658.
Amendment No. 2 for exemption
from taxation of homes to $1,000;
Yes 4,201, No 1,905.
Amendment No. 3 for Classifica
tion of Property: Yes 3,476, No
1,842.
Amendment No. 4 for increasing
limitation of income tax to 10 per
cent: Yes 3,625, No 1,959.
Amendment No. 5 for limitations
on public debt: Yes 3,987, No 1,680.

in Tuesday’s general election over
Republican opponents with the
number of votes cast for President
Roosevelt leading the balance of
the field by a thousand votes. Hie
vote over Landon In the county
was by a ratio of 27 to 1. The to
tals for Halifax County:

Most hotly contested race of the
election was between Hoey and
Grissom for Governor, with Gris
som polling more votes than any
Republican has in Halifax County
for 25 years. 'The Democrat, how
ever, had a substantial lead of over
5 to 1. The vote for the county:
Hoey -6,669
Grissom _1,290
Congressman John H. Kerr led
the State ballot in Halifax County
with a total of 7,318 votes. His Re
publican opponent, Dana Dickens,
received 368 votes.
U. S. Senator Josiah W. Bailey
trailed the others with a total of
7,283 votes but his Republican op
ponent, Frank C. Patton, received
only 393 Halifax County votes.
