LOCAL ARTIST WINNER NATIONAL ART PRIZE BUI Alligood, designer for Rose-5 mary Mfg. Co., cartoonist and Boy Scout executive, won first prize of $50.00 for the best cover for The Lion, official monthly magazine of Lions International. The drawing will be used for the cover on the January issue of The Lion. It was selected from hun dreds of entries from artists all o ver the country. Mr. Alllgood submitted two draw ings for the January contest and has not been notified which one was chosen. One was a figure looking at the rising sun of 1937 with the words, Lions Internation al encircling the sun; the other, which Bill thinks might be the one selected, showed a small boy read ing a copy of the January 1937 is sue of The Lion, the cover of the magazine the boy is reading being that of the same small boy reading the same magazine and so on un til the disappearance point. During his spare time, Bill has drawn for The Raleigh News & Observer, the Roanoke Rapids Her ald and other publications. This is his first entrance into the national field. Mrs. Hawley Hostess The Monday Night Bridge Club was entertained this week by Mrs. Frank Hawley. Twelve guests made up the three tables of pro gressive contract, which was en joyed until ten fifteen, the scores were then added and delightful re freshments were served carrying out Christmas colors effectively. The club members and additional guests included: Mesdames Hugh Camp, Julian Allsbrook, Carroll Wilson, H. S. Loy, Paul Heyden rich, Bohnson Weathers, Scott Ben ton, O. Griffin, W. C. Williams, Misses Ruth Transou, Winifred Beckwith and Lucille Carlon. Franklin Harris is spending some time here with his grandmother, Mrs. T. R. Manning. Miss Elizabeth Griffiths, Miss Ruth Transou and young ’Geane Lehman will spend the holidays with relatives in Bethania, N. C. Stanley White leaves Wednesday for Washington, D. CLEAR HEADS CALL FOR Calvert WHISKIES Xmas Program At Study Club Mrs. Frank Williams and Mrs. Frank Kemp were joint hostesses on Friday of last week to the mem bers of the Study Club, at the home of Mrs. Williams. A most delightful Christmas program was given. A very short business ses sion was held presided over by Mrs. J. N. Bynum, President of the club. In opening the program Mrs. Ft. P. Beckwith read a Christmas Story; Mrs. Heath Lee, accompa nied by Mrs. David Clark, sang two Christmas songs and Miss Ester Pridgen gave a reading “The Night Before Christmas” which was very much enjoyed. Following the pro gram an informal hour was spent, at which time refreshments were served. Mrs. J. itf. Bynum presided over the tea table. Those enjoying the hospitality of Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Kemp were: Mesdames Pendleton Grizzard, Heath Lee, Da vid Clark, C. A. Wyche, Lawrence Clements, R. P. Beckwith, A. Mei kle, David Traynham, J. N. By num, P. A. Reid, Frank Wilson, Cranford Hoyle, Lawrence Stell and Miss Susan Holliday. Mrs. W. S. Dean was special guest of the Club and Mrs. Hoyle and Mrs. Stell were given a most cordial welcome as new members.
