tfSSS? W. H. Daughtry’s bond of $1,000 was al lowed to stand. Superior Court convenes the fourth Monday in January. Rob'ed Jailmate Now the Charge Van Nethery, white man, was bound over to Recorders Court by Mayor Jenkins, accused of robbing Coleman Johnson, col ored, while the two were in jail here. The two had been arrest ed Saturday charged with being drunk. When time came to pay oil the Mayor, Coleman, who says he had over twenty dollars when he was locked up, was broke, while the white man, who had been broke, was flush with coin and paid off his fine. Singer Sewing Machine Co. 930 Roanoke Ave. Dial R-963-1 UP AND DOWN WITH THE Che Avenue • • Not to be confused with Christmas lights on the Avenue is the new amber-colored flicker light which was erected today in front of the Hospital. This is a Caution light for traffic. It means “Slow Down”; altho we watched traffic for a few min utes this afternoon and to some people it seemed to mean, “Speed Up” or “Keep On Going Fast.” This is a dangerous intersection with the Hospital, Postoffice and Municipal Building there and a street leading to the High School. Unless this cau tion light does the work in slowing down traffic in that section, the only thing for the city to do is to put up a Stop light there—and we certainly don’t want that if it can be avoided. So when you see the light, Slow Down, take it easy. You’ll get to where you are going in plenty of time and without an accident. • • The Post Office will close Friday for Christ mas, but will open Saturday morning and stay o pen until noon, in order to take care of late Christ mas package arrivals. It will be open Christmas Eve until 6 p.m. Extra help has been put on but the rush goes on just the same and this is probably the busiest place in the city right now. • • Mrs. Thomas Shearin is among the smaller prize winners in the recent Amos ’n’ Andy Baby Naming Contest. According to the letter received here there were several hundred thousand entries, all trying to name Amos’ baby. So far as we know, Mrs. Shearin is the only Roanoke Rapids person to win a prize. Know of any others here or in the county? 9 9 Hubert White lost his car by tire at the dam site Saturday. His son, Randall, was in the woods to get a Christmas tree and when he returned the ear was in flames. Fire had evidently started in side the car where it was badly burned. • • It would be impossible to pick out all the beautiful homes and yards with Christrrias lights and decorations this year, but there are more in Roanoke Rapids than ever before. We can be im partial, tho, by selecting as the object of our fancy the lighting effects at the Hospital and the Nurses Home. • • J. M. Jackson continues very ill at his home suffering from a stroke of paralysis. A specialist from Richmond examined him the latter part of last week. Today he was a little better and took more nourishment but hopes for his complete re covery are slim. • • Not a word has been heard of the missing men who were last seen on Roanoke River Dec. 8th when Robert Smith says Peter Smith and Ralph Merritt left him to go up the river. He says soon after he heard six shots fired, altho the pair had only two shells. He waited until dark and they did not return and there has been no trace of them since. • • County Commissioners of four counties are said to have signed a petition asking Governor Hoey to appoint John Skinner of Warren County on the State Highway Commission for this district. Mr. Skinner, for 20 years a county commissioner in Warren, has lately been secretary of the State As sociation of County Commissioners. All members of the Halifax County Board signed the petition. EVERYBODY INVITED TO JOIN IN CHRISTMAS SING HERE THURS. AFTERNOON The regular annual Community Sing of Christmas songs will be held this year at the Community Tree in front of the Hospital at 5:30 Christmas Eve afternoon. This tree and program is an an nual event sponsored by the Ki wanis Club and the whole town is invited and urged to attend the open-air service for a half hour of singing. Each year the number of those attending has grown. Police will rope off that portion of the Avenue in front of the Post Office and detour traffic down 7th Street for the half hour. The Rosemary Concert Band under J. Sanders’ direction will furnish the music. Local pastors of churches will take part. All members of church choirs, school glee clubs and Sunday Schools are asked to gather nearest the tree where R. L. Towe will direct the singing. Everybody is urged to sing. The songs are printed on the front page of this issue. Bring +h<« page with you, in case there are not enough song copies to go a* round.
