At their id rode a swarthy-skinned, ath ic giant. He was Cen. Thomas ixandre Dumas, son of a mar is and a Haitian negress, and her of the great French au ir, Alexandre Dumas. Behind a barricade of upturned rts. blocking a narrow bridge, > Austrians stood ready with :ked rifles. Dumas, powerful d impetuous, did not hesitate, the head of 25 volunteers, he ihed the bridge. Bullets rained him and his men, but they ? rled the carts into the river and ' ept across the bridge. Slashing to right and left with 1 huge saber. Dumas left a trail | dying and wounded Austrians. B The enemy fled; the dragoons pursued. Suddenly Dumas' aide stopped him. He was being led into a trap. A new Austrian cav alry detachment was approaching. But as they crossed the bridge in pairs, Dumas, standing alone, mowed them down with that mighty saber until aid arrived. He had killed eight men. he had been wounded three times, his horse had been shot from under him. and seven bullets had pierced his cloak. _ For such feats he was known as "the black devil." A Haitian stamp of 1936 pictures the vali ant general, together with his illustrious son and his almost as fa mous grandson. It is shown here.
