I UP AND DOWN WITH TOT | Uhe Avenue j • • Two branches of the city service met Monday night at 9:15 when the Fire Department was called to put out a fire in the City Jail. Two inmates, charged with being drunk, had set fire to a mat tress. The fire was put out quickly with damage only to the mattress. • • They always told me it wasn’t the payment but the upkeep that made a man pay and pay and pay. We know what they meant now. Bought a home here in Roanoke Rapids a year ago and ev erything went along fine until last Summer when a tree doctor came around. Love trees, want more, want to keep what we got. This tree surgeon con vinced us the only way to do it was to fill up the hollow patches with some sort of cement, draw the spreading limbs together with braces, trim and spray. Every tree on the place underwent a ma jor operation and the investment had grown an other hundred dollars.—A short time ago, we saw some flying ants coming out from under the front porch. Another expert came along, examined the patient, made a complete diagnosis and pronounc ed the disease: Termites. So under the house he went with his crew and his pressure tanks and stunk up the premises while he rid the underpin ning of termites. Another hundred bucks. And so it goes with property owners. It’s swell to own your own home, but keep account of these extras when anybody wants to know what it cost you. However, we do not begrudge that hundred paid out to rid us of termites. The day the man told us about it, we walked down the street like a criminal, thought everybody was talking about us, could al most hear them whisper that awful sounding sen tence, “He’s got termites.” • • This week Senator Long of Halifax introduc ed a bill which would add North Carolina to the list of those States ratifying the amendment to the Federal Constitution which does away with child labor. This is one of the important actions which President Roosevelt has asked the States to take. He favors abolition of child labor because it gives a child a chance to get an education and live a normal child life; because it takes children out of working ranks and makes places for older persons who need jobs. The child is able to become a bet ter citizen; the ranks of the unemployed are lessen ed. North Carolina failed last session to ratify. Governor Hoey is not in favor of ratifying now. It seems to us the Governor should again compare his vote with that given the President in North Carolina and gather from that vote the fact that NOTICE C. A barber pays a spe cial State tax of $3 now. The proposal is to raise it to $10. Every barber in the city but two signed the petition. Other barbers could not understand why they did not sign. In case you didn’t know, there are about twenty licensed barbers in Roa noke Rapids. © ® New members elected to the Roanoke Rapids Lions Club at the Jan. 7 meeting were Ed Slaugh ter, Wyche Land, Ivey Mohorn and Roland John son.
