C., Feb. 25— The status of bills and laws affecting Roanoke Rapids and Halifax County in the State leg 1 islature this afternoon is as follows: SB 36 to amend Wel don Charter ordered en rolled (passed both Houses) Jan. 28. SB 91 to amend Roa noke Rapids charter or dered enrolled Feb. 13. SB 129 re fishing in Roanoke now in Senate Conservation Develop ment Committee. SB 137 to amend laws relative March term Hal ifax Court ordered en rolled Feb. 12. l SB 169 re milk bottle ordered sent to House Feb. 25 after passing Senate. SB iy7 re abu Board1 (passed Senate) may come up for passage to night or tomorrow. SB 198 re Register Deeds in House, Coun ties, Cities, Towns Com mitte. HB 545 re Fees for registration certain pa pers in Register of Deeds office now in Sen ate Salaries and Fees Committee. The bill to amend the town of Weldon charter I abolishes election of the 9 town clerk and returns the office into the hands of the town council, which would have ap pointive power here. The bill relating to milk bottles in Halifax and also Northampton (Continued on Page 4) SUBMIT PROJECT TO PAYE JACKSON. HAMILTON, SIDES A street paving project for Roanoke Rapids, which calls for the concreting of Jackson and Ham ilton Streets from First to 11th on Jackson and from First to 14th on Hamilton, with curbs, gut ters and storm sewers, is now before the proper PWA State officials and receiving serious con sideration, according to a letter received today by Mayor Kelly Jenkins. -9 Also included is a project to wid Scan New Plant Layout NEW INDUSTRIAL UNIT FOR FRANKLIN, VIRGINIA Looking over plans for site of Chesapeake Camp Company, Inc., plant are Town Man ager Thompson; P. Another part of the project would pave Tenth Street as far as the railroad. All side streets from the Avep>s to Hamilton and from the A'jEaj 'Jf Jackson are included in jft'Ued paving. "Thiiilire cost of the project will be about $270,000 of which 45 per cent or $121,500 would be a grant from the Federal government, the balance being split between the city and the adjacent property owners; the city paying $74,000 and the property owners a like amount. The city would finance with a 30 year bond issue, the property owners being given ten years to pay their assessments. If approv ed by Raleigh PWA officials, the project goes to Washington for ap proval there. Ditch Approved The Mayor was notified today that the PWA project for piping and filling in the ditch on Roanoke Avenue between 11th and 14th had been approved by Raleigh and the papers are now in ^Washington for final approval. Good news on this is expected next week. New Street Stopt The new street from 3rd to the new city school building was de layed when a controversy arose with T. Lee Whittaker, from whom the school property was purchased. The matter was fixed up but bad weather has continued to delay starting the job again. Halifax Speaker M. G. Mann, Farmers Co-op head, who will speak to Halifax County farmers at the Courthouso on March 5th. (See Page 24)
