SUBMIT PROJECT
TO PAYE JACKSON.
HAMILTON, SIDES
A street paving project for Roanoke Rapids,
which calls for the concreting of Jackson and Ham
ilton Streets from First to 11th on Jackson and
from First to 14th on Hamilton, with curbs, gut
ters and storm sewers, is now before the proper
PWA State officials and receiving serious con
sideration, according to a letter received today by
Mayor Kelly Jenkins.

ture in The American, sent for their plate, herewith reproduces the first
picture of him ever to appear in this paper.

curb between Third and Ninth Sts.
Another part of the project would
pave Tenth Street as far as the
railroad. All side streets from the
Avep>s to Hamilton and from the
A'jEaj 'Jf Jackson are included in
jft'Ued paving.
"Thiiilire cost of the project will
be about $270,000 of which 45 per
cent or $121,500 would be a grant
from the Federal government, the
balance being split between the
city and the adjacent property
owners; the city paying $74,000 and
the property owners a like amount.
The city would finance with a
30 year bond issue, the property
owners being given ten years to
pay their assessments. If approv
ed by Raleigh PWA officials, the
project goes to Washington for ap
proval there.
Ditch Approved
The Mayor was notified today
that the PWA project for piping
and filling in the ditch on Roanoke
Avenue between 11th and 14th had
been approved by Raleigh and the
papers are now in ^Washington for
final approval. Good news on this
is expected next week.
New Street Stopt
The new street from 3rd to the
new city school building was de
layed when a controversy arose
with T. Lee Whittaker, from whom
the school property was purchased.
The matter was fixed up but bad
weather has continued to delay
starting the job again.
Halifax Speaker
