Another Double Play For Johnny
Erers—This one is Evers-to-Bolley
to-Flood Sufferers. The great for
mer second baseman (left) and
member of the immortal Tinker-to
Evers - to - Chance double play
combination recently auctioned
off a thirteen-year-old baseball.
The ball, his most valued posses
sion, was used in those games
and later on a playing trip around
the world. Evers offered it, cov
ered with autographs of great
old-time players, for the benefit
of flood Sufferers through Leo
Bolley, sports commentator on the
latter's Tydol and Veedol radio
programs.

Teaches Swimming Submerged Under Water ■
via Loudspeaker—A novel way of instructing ]
has been devised by Ben York of Detroit, who
dons a diving helmet and coaches the swim
mer through a microphone installed in the
headpiece. The instructor thereby can watch
the movements of the swimmer who in turn
can listen over the loudspeaker to criticism
and correction.

Dressing Up The Mike—Funnyman Fred Allen thinks
the microphone too impersonal, so he dressed this j

Don't Quote Me
(Continued from preceding page)
Even luck in its rarest form
won’t permit a “perfect break” un
less from somewhere comes help—
either from inside the prison walls
or outside.
From some place came guns to
arm a part of the seven men who
escaped. The others came from
the prison arsenal after the escape
was begun.
One official pointed out it would
have been very easy for an honor
man to have smuggled a gun into
the prison camp from the outside.
Seldom are they searched.
Or a visitor to the camp might
have brought the guns to the men.
Visitors are searched occasionally.
0 Now apparently an investiga
tion by the house penal division in
to low salaries of prison guards
will be made.
It may be a long-drawn-out-af
fair, with hearings in several state
prison camps. Or it may be com
pletely forgotten.
It is apparent the legislature and
the penal division do not have the
press of the state upon their heads
as in 1935 when editorial pages
yelled that the state’s prison gang
treatment was "inhumane.”
