UP AND DOWN WITH THE
Ghe Avenue
• • The Duke University Glee Club will broad
cast over WABC next Sunday, Feb. 28th, at 2:30
until 2:45 p.m. E.S.T. The program will originate
in the New York studios, with J. Foster Barnes as
director. All Duke alumni and prospects and all
those who are against Duke (between the two that
should take care of the local population) are in
vited to listen in Sunday afternoon. The program
will be well worthwhile. This is a national broad
cast.
• • Here’s one for Ripley. On Washington’s
birthday here in Mayor Kelly’s police court, the
prosecuting witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. George
Washington. The Mayor, when he asked for the
name of the witnesses, was astounded and asked
that the name be repeated. He then reminded them
that it was Washington’s birthday and fined the
two assailants of George, who was at his home at
the time of the assault, $20 and $25 plus costs.
• • The city lost anoth er White Way standard
(rather the Pdwer Co. lost one) yesterday after
noon when Mannie Pair of Skippers backed his
truck into the standard in front of Roanoke Rap
ids Grocery Co. Chased by Chief Dobbins and
caught between Camps Store and Pleasant Hill,
the negro said he didn’t know anything about it,
just remembered a bump. Brought back here and
shown the damage done, and after a few hours in
the local bastile, he forked over $100 cash bail for
later appearance.
• • Those having to pay a State income tax may
have free assistance from a State Revenue man
who will be at the Municipal Building in Roanoke
Rapids on March 5th and again on March 12th.
Deadline is March 15th for both State and Federal
taxes.
• • Three votes were cast against the Revenue
Bill in the Senate this week on the third reading.
One of them was that of Senator Long of Halifax,
who voted for the sales tax on meals, but in voting
against the entire revenue bill later, said, “I didn’t
vote for it because I’m against the sales tax in
principle. I was sent here to represent my people,
and I’m confident that if an election were held in
Halifax County tomorrow, not one per cent of the
voters would vote for the sales tax.”
• • Among out of town patients at the Roanoke
Rapids Hospital are Jimmie Crowder of Warren
ton, Mrs. James Jones of Warrenton, Miss Hazel
Boyd of Seaboard, Mrs. Nora Jenkins of Vaughan,
J. D. Lambeth of George, Miss Helen Taylor of Ga

H. S. Burgwyn Jr. of Woodland, in for an appen
dectomy.—F. I. Gordon is very ill with pnemonia,
tho better today. Jack Fanny is up after a serious
illness. Hospital manager T. J. Alford is ill in his
own hospital tonight.
• • Births at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital this
week: to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Lyles, a girl, Tuesday;
to Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Blanchard, a girl on the 19th;
to Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Perkinson, a boy, Tuesday;
to Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Birdsong, a girl, on the 20th;
to Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Harris, a girl, today.
• • Mr. and Mrs. BiUy Williams and Mrs. Wm.
White, on a trip to Florida for the past two weeks,
are staying at The Palms, new tourist camp on the
South side of Ft. Myers, Fla. Here we spent two
delightful days and nights. We can recommend
The Palms as the last word in tourist camps. Thir
ty new houses, a central dining room, or if you
prefer to cook your own meals, a grocery store for
that purpose. Each house has a private garage.
The living room is well furnished with comfortable
chairs, a day bed, reading lamps, a gas grate for
chilly nights; the bathroom is the last word in
complete fixtures, with plenty of towels and hot
water; two bedrooms with furniture to match,
Beautyrest Mattresses, plenty of closet space; a
complete kitchen and dinette, gas range, hot and
cold water, gas refrigerator, dishes, cooking uten
sils, electric toaster and percolator.—The price for
the house, for four persons, $1.50 each per day.
• • Speaking of Beautyrest Mattresses, on which
we slept most every night, it is now the fashion for
tourist camps and homes to advertise something
like this:
The Do Come Inn
Beautyrest Mattresses
We bet we saw twenty camps advertising this
Simmons product in lighted signs.

Hoard’g Doesn't
Pay, Says Farm'r
WILSON, N. C., Feb. 25— (UP)
—Hoarding money doesn’t pay,
John T. Woodard, Johnston
County farmer, probably will tell
anyone who might be interested.
The 70-year-old farmer return
ed home to find thieves had stol
en some $3,000 in “old-time” big
currency he had hoarded for the
past 25 years. The house had
been turned topsy-turvy by the
intruders.
The money, in $5, $10 and $20
bills, had been secreted in mat
resses, tin buckets and tin buck
ets in a closet.
County authorities have been
notified.
LOCAL BILLS
(Continued from Front Page)
counties merely tightens
the state law to the ef

either.
The bill to amend the

to the term of office of
the register of deeds for

a small typographical er
