OUSTS COUNTY ABC BOARD
SPECIAL BILL FOR
HALIFAX WILL GIVE
COM'ISSIONERS JOB
_ ale
Senator T. W. M. Long introduc
ed a bill in the State Senate yes
terday which, when passed and
ratified, will oust the present Hal
ifax County Alcoholic Beverage
Control Board and assign their
duties to the County Board of
Commissioners. The law will affect
only Halifax County, other coun
ties retaining their present ABC
boards.
The three members of the coun
ty ABC board, who will lose their
jobs when the bill becomes law, are
W. A. Thorne of Roanoke Rapids,
chairman, B. B. Everette of Pal
myra and R. Hunter Pope of En
field. This board installed the pres
ent control system in Halifax
County and have had charge of the
system since July, 1935. Their terms
would have expired this Summer,
with the County Board of Com
missioners appointing their suc
cessors, under the original Pasquo
tank Act. Under the new State
Act just passed, their terms would
have been extended until 1939.
Senator Long’s new bill calls for
regular per diem pay for the Com
missioners while on ABC business.
The present set-up gave per diem
pay to two members, a salary of
$50 per month to the Chairman.
