C._THURSDAY, AUG. 5,1937_NUMBER 4 CITY BOARD INAUGUST MEETING The City Board of Commission ers of Roanoke Rapids met in reg ular monthly meeting Tuesday, Au gust 3rd and ordered the school e lection for the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District set for Tuesday, October 5th. At this time, three school trus tees will be elected. The registra tion books will open for new vot ers ,not registered, on Sept. 17th and_ will remain open thru Satur day, Sept. 25th. The books will be at the High School building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The Oity Board appointed P. A. Reid as reg istrar. A $6,000 tax anticipation note was authorized by the Board to be ap proved by the Local Government Commission. Tax Collector A. E. Akers was authorized to advertise delinquent taxpayers’ property on September 13th. An appropriation for WPA play ground supervision for the city was ordered raised from $180 to $300. DEATHS Mrs. Ida Harrupp Mrs. Ida E. Harrupp, 70, died heer August 1st. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. August 2nd at Williams Funeral Home by the Rjev. Kermit Traylor with inter nment in Southampton County, Va. jThe deceased was the widow of the late J. W. Harrup. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. E. T. Man nery and Mrs. K. D. Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids and three sons, Tommy, George and Surrey of Courtland, Va. Peggy M. Wallace Peggy Mae Wallace, two months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wallace, died at the Roa noke Rapids Hospital at 4:30 this morning. Funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon. Mary M. Exum Mary Magdalene Exum, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Exum, died at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital July 30th of colitis. CITY SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS '37 BUDGET _ « The School Board of the Roanoke' Raids Graded School District met last Friday, adopted the budget for the coming year, set the tax rate and made plans for the opening of city schools which open here on Monday, September 6th. A report was made of payments made during 1936-37 as follows: on bonds $12,500, interest and commis sion $26,614.30 and the wiping out of a State loan by a final payment of $53,500.00. ' The tax rate was retained at one dollar for the purposji of meeting an increase in bond/1 payment in 1939 which can thus be done with out a further increase in the tax rate then. 1 The original indebtedness of the school district was' $664,000, of which $550,000 was; in bonds and $114,000 in a State / loan. This lat ter has been paid off in the past few years and the bond principal cut to $405,000 which represents the present debt. The budget adopted for the com ing school year is: Current expense -$140,553.32 Debt service - .36,312.46 Capital Outlay- 4,200.00 TOTAL _ 181,065.78 REVENUE From State -$82,009.00 From County- 4,541.00 Property Taxes - 101,000.00 Poll Taxes - 2,475.00 Rents, Fees, etc. - 1,875.00 191,900.00 The difference of $10,000 was made to allow for delinquent taxes. In case the delinquent taxes are collected, the revenue will be used for much-needed repairs to local school buildings. MERCHANTS STAGE PET PARADE, BEAUTY CONTEST HERE TODAY POOL WILL RE-OPEN AUG. 23rd The high school swimming pool closed July 31 for a three weeks pe riod.^ It., will be open again on August 33, and will remain open until the beginning of school. There is a possibility of its continuing in operation for the first few weeks of school. The high school playground will not be held in connection with the swimming pool as it has been pre viously. The playground has had a suc cessful season. An average of twenty-five boys has attended each day during the eight weeks. They participated in baseball, volleyball, softball, horse shoe pitching and swimming. Father And Daughter Are Hurt In Wreck Philip Hawkins, 48 year old farm er, and his nine year old daughter, Gladys, are in the Roanoke Rap ids Hospital suffering from injuries they received in a car wreck near Aurelian Springs late yesterday afternoon. Mr. Hawkins has an injured knee and the girl was cut in the face by flying glass. Both are reported better today. Miss Mary Virginia Jenkins won first prize in the Bathing Beauty Contest this afternoon staged by the Merchants Association of Roa noke Rapids as part of an all-day program here. Second prize was won by Miss Louise Falkner, a vis itor in the city. Third prize was awarded to Miss Emily Dunning, fourth prize to Miss Doris Drewette and fifth prize to Miss Alice Myrick. Aha >.ig the little tots who pa raded first prize went to little Jane Edwards, second prize to Joan Ed wards and third prize to Mildred Dickens. There were 33 entries in the bathing beauty contest and the pa rade started at the Exposition grounds and the judging took place on the lot next to Nash Motor Co. This morning more than fifty children entered their pets in a Pet Parade which started at Nash Mo tor Co. and ended at the Lions Ex position grounds where the prizes were given. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in uniforms, bicycle troops, two sound trucks, The Buckaroos and others enlivened the Avenue parade. Clifton Cooper won first prize with his goats, Libby Powers sec ond prize with a pet dog and Thomas Medlin took third prize with a pet fox. Fourth prize was won by Mary Lou Starke with a tiny canary, fifth prize by Betty Hawkins with a kitten, sixth prize to Rudolph Gibson and his pigeon, seventh prize to Mary Clark and her dog and eighth prize to Kath erine Wood and her three little dogs. All prizes were donated by the Merchants Association which is staging a series of special sales this Friday and Saturday at local stores in conjunction with the Li ons Exposition.
