T. Johnson, promi nent business man of Roanoke Rapids. Mr. John son is owner of Johnson’s Laundry and a leader in the civic life of this community. His appointment by Judge Frizelle is one which will be received with much commendation by the citizens of the county. • • Fire broke out in the dye room of Rosemary Mfg. Co. at 3 p.m. Tuesday: The fire was quickly extinguished by employees and the heat was suf ficient to start part of the automatic sprinklers. Most of the damage was from the water. • • Jay Sanders will take one of the most com plete bands to Wilson Festival this week where the local musicians have been contracted to make mu sic for the entire program. Twenty two men will compose the band and Director Sanders says it will be the best band he has assembled in many years. • • The swimming pool at the High School will open again Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. and will con tinue open every afternoon until further notice® • • Rev. V. H. Grantham, former pastor here, and now pastor of the Christian Church of Clear water, Florida, was a visitor here this week. He and his family leave here to visit in Goldsboro and other North Carolina cities before returning to Florida. • • Capt. Peter Koolwyck, former resident of Roanoke Rapids, just back from a year’s trip to his . native Holland and other points in Europe, was the speaker at the Kiwanis Club tonight and told of his journeys thru Holland, England, Germany, Swit zerland and Italy. Other guests of the club were Jim Reese of Wilmington, DeL, Fred Wilmer and Howard Han<jp®k of Roanoke Rapids, J. C. Crews, Jr., formerly of Oxford. T. W. Mullen presided. W. S. Dean, chairman of the Farm Committee, re ported on the All-Day celebration at the Fair Grounds next Wednesday in th<>;jiterest of the Curb Market. Dr. McGeachey corrected the re port that there were four cases of pellagra in the county. He says there are 300 or 400, but the four cases he reported on were of loss of mind due to pellagra. • • Plate glass is being put in the new Smith Building t’ is week for the Woolworth Store down stairs and work is being rushed so the tenants may have occupancy of the building in about two weeks. After that Mr. Smith plans to continue work on finishing the upstairs and lobby for the enlarged hotel. • • The Recreation Center, Roanoke Rapids’new bowling alleys, opened for business last night in the location of the old A&P store with capacity (Continued on Page 4) Garland Cox, 81 year old white man of this city, who received a 15 year sentence in Halifax Superi or Court this week for assault on a female child, had liis sentence reduced by Judge Frizelle today. His new sentence is from five to seven years. The redaction in sentence came this morning just before final ad journment of this term of Superior Court. (COMPLETE STORY INSIDE) WHITE MAN UNDER BOND IN CAR DEATH Badger Reid, white man of Hali fax County, is under a $2,000 bond and a charge of manslaughter in the death of Mary Purnell, 68 year old colored woman, who was killed by Reid’s car Tuesday. The death occurred on Highway 125 between Halifax and Scotland Neck. There is a question as to the location of the woman when she was struck by the car. Negro witnesses say she was sitting on the side of the road next to n mail box when the car swerved out and hit her. Reid says he was passing a wagon and the woman was in the road. A hit and run charge against Reid in the case was dismissed by Judge Daniel who sat at the exam ining trial. HEAVY SENTENCES IN CRIMINAL COURT - * * Chester Cutler, 31 year old white man, was sentenced to from five to seven years in prison when found guilty of secret assault in Halifax Superior Court this week. Cut ler was charged with as saulting William George near Roa noke Junction about four months ago, striking him with an iron pipe. Herbert Murphy, 61 Patterson village, was sentenced to 6 months on the road when found guilty of stealing a shot gun and pistol from the lobby of the Smith Hotel here. J. F. Mitchell, white, of Roa noke Rapids, probably wishes he had left well enough alone. He ap pealed a 6 months sentence for a bandonment and non-support from the Recorder Court. This week, in Superior Court, he was sentenced to two years. George Hyman, Colored of Wel don, received from 5 to 7 years on the roads for assault with a dead ly weapon. He gave notice of ap peal to the Supreme Court, making his own appeal without counsel.. His appeal bond was fixed at $75, his appearance bond at $3,000. He has filled neither to date. Thomas Bowers of Littleton, col ored, received 6 months on the roads for larceny. Carl Twiford, 56 year old white man, pled guilty to a charge of as sault on a female and was sentenc ed to two years on the roads. 'the case of Ernest Shearin, Dick Lynch, Perry Gregory and Duke Shearin, charged with secret as sault with intent to kill and con spiracy, was continued. Algie Smith, colored, of Scotland Neck, received from 5 to 7 years when found guilty of breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony. W. ALLEN FUNERAL IS TODAY Walter Allen, 70 years old, a res ident of Roanoke Rapids for the past 16 years, died early Wednes day morning at his home, 78 Wash ington St. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the residence with interment In Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cissie Allen, five daughters, Mrs. John Pierce, Mrs. Martha Cutler, Mrs. Anna Mae Reynolds, Mrs. Ola Shearin and Mrs. Wilma Edwards, all of tills city, and two step daughters, Mrs. Clara Reynolds and Mrs. D. A. Hudson. The deceased was a native of Tyrrell County. EURE AND OTHERS TO SPEAK Local Curb Market Bldg. To Have Spotlight in .All-Day Meet *■'# wide mass meeting ef city and country folks will be held at the Halifax County Fair Grounds, on the highway between Roanoke Rapids and WUdor, all day Wednesday, August 2ifch. The meeting is under the auspices of the Home Demonstration Clubs of Halifax County and one of the pur poses is to raise funds for the new Curb Market BuUding to be erect ed in Roanoke Rapids. Money will be raised by the side of food and drinks on the grounds during the day by the clubs. Bar becue, brunswick stew, cold drinks, etc. will be sold by the ladies. A big Bingo game will also be operated. Everybody in the county is invited and the various clubs thruout the county are working up groups of visitors to spend the day in this section. speakers during the day’s pro gram include John W. Goodman, assistant director of the Extension Dept, of State College, who will speak at 11 a.m.; M. C. Mann, head of the N .C. Cotton Co-ops, who will speak at ndon; Mrs. Rosslyn Redfern, Home Demonstration A gent of Anson County, who will speak at 2 p.m.; the Rev. L. I. Stell of the Roanoke Rapids Presbyteri an Church, who speaks at 3 pan.; and Secretary of State Thad Eure, who speaks at 4 p.m. A parade of floats, designed by the county clubs showing the va rious phases of club work, will start from the Fairgrounds about noon and parade the business sec tions of Roanoke Rapids and Wel don. R. Hunter Pope and County Farm Agent W. O. Davis are assisting the ladies in the program and Mr. Pope will be master of ceremonies. Plans for the Curb Market build ing at Roanoke Rapids call for a 60 by 80 brick building to be erect ed at the corner of 8th and Madi son on lots which have already been purchased by the county for project. Blueprints of the build ing are now in * the possession of Mrs. Hazel E. Wheeler, County Home Demonstration Agent. Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
