(PHOTO BY GRANT) 100 PER CENT GIFT BY PATTERSON MILL DEPT TO CHARITIES The members of the Lions and Kiwanls Clubs will make their first reports on the annual Associated Charities drive for 1937-38 tonight. These two clubs have agreed to help Associated Charities with the drive this year and plan to call on every man and woman in the city between now and next Saturday when the drive ends. A friendly contest is on between the clubs, the club getting the least amount of money and pledges hav ing agreed to donate an extra $25 to Associated Charities. - - ^ . - r---*- ~ The need for funds for this Win ter is said to be exceedingly great and every citizen is urged to con tribute as much as possible for the year’s work. The money can be paid in cash, in monthly payments or in merchandise orders. First report made was from Pat terson Mills Co. where it was re ported today that every person in a department of 85 made a contribu tion. Complete details of contribu tions will be made in this newspa per in the next two issues. GIRL DIES OF BURNS Viola Walker, five year old Lit tleton girl, died of bums at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital at mid night last night. The little girl was rushed here from Littleton late yesterday after noon after she had suffered severe burns when her clothing caught fire while she was standing in front of an open fireplace..^ Horrible burns on h<> face and body proved fatal. AVENUE FIRMS TO START MOVES THIS WEEK TO NEW SITES This week and next will be moving week for four Avenue business firms in Roanoke Rapids. Those affected by the moves to new locations are the Dr.Pepper Bottling Co,, the Nash Motor Co., the Thompson Motor Co. ant a fiew grocery firm. COMING TO COUNTY .1 ■—I—I ■ " .I I Governor Clyde Hoey wiU come to Halifax] County next week when he speaks Thursday after noon at the annual Cotton & Peanut Festival at Enfield which starts Monday and lasts all next week. The Festival is being promoted by the Enfield Lions Club and promises to be an annual affair. Governor Hoey’s address climaxes a full day of activities designated as “Farmers Day.” Other state officials and notables will be on the program with the governor. . , . - fix-'> ’UC'i ■ •• •. v - " The Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. is ^moving from its present location between First and Second Streets to the Nash Motor Co. building & cross the street, which building the bottling firm ^recently purchased. Manager Robert Hines hopes to move his plant over this week-end and the first of next week in a manner which will cause the plant to be down only one day or a day and a half. This week, the plant has been working extra time but tling a surplus to take care of their customers. The Nash Motor Co. has leased the building at the corner of Ninth and the Avenue, which building has been occupied by the Thompson Motor Co. and formerly by the Joy . ner Motor Co. Manager George Nash started moving today and hopes to be in his new place of bus iness within 48 hours. The Thompson Motor Co., liquid ating its business, will use the lots of the new Hudson Service Station for display of their remaining used cars. It is understood that a new gro cery store will occupy the place now used by the Dr.Pepper Co., but no details could be learned today. Thad Eure, Secretary of State, who will also be on hand at the En field Cotton & Peanut Festival next Thursday. This annual event Is under the auspices of the Enfield Lions Club.
