B VUP AND DOWN WITH THE Ghe Avenue Setifo* • • The Halifax County Federation of Home Demonstration Club will hold an Achievement Day program on Monday, December 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the Halifax County Club House at Halifax. • • Snow and ice today brought several auto wrecks on the slick streets. A truck of C. D. Wil liams and a car banged together this morning at the corner of 3rd and Hamilton. The car turned over but no one was injured. Tommy Brown was in the overturned car . . . Two cars also clashed in South Rosemary this a.m. but none were hurt . . . At noon, a couple cars kissed on the Avenue ... All of which should remind all of us to be as careful as possible during this kind of weather. • • One man failed to see Pitt heat Duke 10 to 0 at Durham last Saturday. His car wrecked near here on its way from Portsmouth to Durham and he spent the rest of the day in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital... The game was good and Duke played real ball against the best team in the country... It was not that Pitt was off but that Duke was on which made the score close. Goldberg was stopped plenty but he was still plenty good. Hackney should not be blamed for the fumble which led to the field goal. He did not have a chance to catch that ball. It was damp down there but warm and nobody seemed to mind. • • Police are looking for two boys who were seen leaving a stolen car yesterday. Mrs. L. F. Gray of Newsoms, Va., was visiting her mother, Mrs. Wiley Barnett, in the Roanoke Rapids Hospi tal yesterday. In a hurry to see her mother, she left the key in her car. The two boys drove the car away and would have been a long way from here had the gas not run out. The person who saw them leave the car notified the police and the car was returned by them to Mrs. Gray. • • There seems to be some misunderstanding a bout the Christmas Oportunities of which the first list appears in this issue. Associated Charities must investigate all cases before they are listed and only the worst cases are taken for aid. Fami lies, whose heads are now on short time, cannot possibly expect aid as there are others where there are no wage earners at all in the family and these must be taken care of first. Please turn to the list of 22 Opportunities and study these cases. You will see those are families actually in distress and with little or no source of income. Another list will be published next week. Please refer to all cases by number. When you call Mr. Bynum, say, “I will take case No. 12”. • • The first real snow of the year in Roanoke Rapids fell today with the ground completely cov ered with several inches of snow . . . just right for making snowballs and snow men . . . Hunting sea son is on with a bang and due to the eagle eyes of hunters Dean and Beckwith, we were in luck this week with birds on Tuesday and geese on Wednes day . . . We are not a hunter but a swell fisherman ... Of course, fishing is no good until Spring but any hunters interested will find us glad to do a lit tle exchanging ... a bird or two now for the prom ise of a nice big bass next Spring. • • Clerk Ruby Wood now has the 1938 city auto license tags on sale at the Municipal Building. These are not to be confused with the State tags which must be purchased in Rocky Mount or Ra leigh . .. Colors this year are black numbers on a yellow background, reverse of 1937 . . . Only case in Mayor’s Court Monday was Johnny McPherson, colored, accused of theft of a shirt, two quarts of oil and two Dr. Peppers from the Dr. Pepper Bot tling Co. Johnny used to work there and persists on hanging around the plant. He was bound over to Recorders Court. • • The ice box of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Stowe which is installed on the back porch was visited Sunday night by someone leaving no card but tak ing away a beef roast, a rabbit, sweet potatoes and vegetables. Coroner Grant of Northampton : County viewed the body Tuesday and ordered it taken to W. C. Wil liams Funeral Home without ren dering a verdict, altho at that time it was thought the man’s death was due to accidental drown ing. However, examination at the fu neral tn^v.e revealed that there was a «eep "gash on the man’s head and that there was no water in his lungs. Coroner Grant was out of this section today and it could not be learned what he would do after he had received this additional in formation. Bowser was identified by a bill of sale for a bale of cotton which Was found on his person. He left his home Sunday morn ing, Nov. 7th, to go to Root’s Is land and get his boat. He evident ly went over on a flat for his tracks were found on the island. But to add to the mystery, his boat is still missing. When he did not return that Sunday night, his wife says she thought he was attending a wake at Pilson Hick’s and when he did not return Monday morning, she sent her son to trace him. He wont to the river and found the tracks on the island. Deputy sheriff G. r • Cray was notified and searched that day and on several other oc casions without finding any trace of man or boat. This Tuesday morning, 23 days later, R. L. Black and Jesse Fisher who were hauling lumber from the river, saw a body floating in the fax County bank. This was about a mile down the river from the island. The two white men called to C. R. Briley and Robert Hicks, who brought a row boat and a flat. W. B. Harrison and Fisher follow ed the floating body and saw it go under a raft. With a pole they pushed the body up on the bank and came to Roanoke Rapids to report their gruesome discovery. Bowser had a pair of rubber boots on when he left home. Both boots were gone when the body was tak en from the river. The Negro owned his own far<n and leaves a wile and nine chil dren.
