Meikle Christmas Scene, which has attracted thousands to Roanoke Rapids, is alight again this week and will remain so each night until after Christmas. For the benefit of those who have not seen it, the display is next to the Miekle resi dence on East 10th St., two blocks from Roanoke Avenue. Only addition to the group, showing the Bethlehem scene of The Nativity, is the sign, “Peace On Earth, Good Will Toward Men.” • • The Avenue is again becoming a scene of bright lights as the Christmas lights and decora tions begin to appear. The colored lights of the Merchants Association are up and all store win dows are especially decorated for the holiday sea son. Clerk Ruby Wood and her assistants have done a beautiful job of decorating the Municipal Building, with soft blue lights predominating. A new and larger edition of the old faithful star at 9th St. now gleams in front of the Municipal Build ing. Wilson, official of General Amuse ments Inc. of Roanoke Rapids, was elected 2nd Vice President of the Theatre Owners of North & South Carolina at the annual convention at Pine hurst this week. • • There was some talk by the County Board of Commisisoners of combining all the county insur ance and giving it to one broker who would split the commission with the other insurance agencies of the county. The idea was to keep from dealing with so many different agencies. They thought everything was agreed to until Monday when the following problems were faced: (1) at the last minute the agents could not agree on a broker; (2) instead of seven agencies in the county to split the commission, about 35 agencies and individ uals tried to get in on the pot. Result: nothing done. Status quo. • • The Wrenn Funeral Home has a new Packard hearse . . . John S. Kirk of Weldon was injured in an auto wreck Tuesday night and had his head stitched . . . Miss Rachel Myrick was brought to the hospital yesterday suffering from appendicitis ... Edwin T. Zollicoffer, son of the late Dr. Dallas B. and Katherine Thomas Zollicoffer, and brother of Mrs. Frank West of Roanoke Rapids, Allen Zol licoffer, former attorney here, and John Zollicof fer of Weldon, died Saturday morning. Funeral services were Sunday at Weldon Methodist Church. • • The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department is co operating with Associated Charities and the Boy Scouts and will act as headquarters for collecting old toys and old clothing for poor children's Christ mas. The members of the Fire Department will be glad to call for your old toys and clothing. Phone R-356. • • John Myrick was brought to the hospital Fri day night suffering from a series of cuts inflicted with a knife. One slash across his face barely missed one eye. His throat was cut and the upper part of his body received several slashes. • • One of the most attractively decorated build ings—well, we will say in North Carolina, at least, is the VEPCO building on the Avenue ... STORES STAY OPEN Starting Friday, Dec. 17th, the stores of Roanoke Rapids will start staying open later at night than usual in order to accommodate their patrons during the Christmas shopping season. —Stores in the city will be open until 8 pan. each week-day night POLICE SHAKE-UP KEEPS BOARD BUSY ~—— — 2 WOMEN STILL IN HOSPIT'L Three persons were Injured, two women seriously, when two cars wrecked about 6:30 Saturday aft ernoon on the highway between Camp’s Store and Pleasant Hill. The injured were Mrs. Tommy Hargrove, Miss Mayme Draper and G. B. Wheeler. The fourth occu pant of the car, S. M. Jones, was uninjured. The wreck took place just after dark when Wheeler’s car and that of David Barnes, colored, collided on the highway. Emmett Mayo was driving Barnes’ car. Neither was hurt in this car. The two women are still in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital where they were taken soon after the wreck. Mrs. Hargrove is the most seriously injured with a broken collar bone, chest injuries and se vere lacerations. Miss Draper also is suffering from chest and head injuries. From ten to fifteen stitches were necessary on cuts about the face and head sustained by Wheeler. He was able to leave the hospital the night of the wreck. Wheeler and Jones, who were members of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, were not on duty at the time of the wreck, both men being scheduled to go on at midnight. closing times will be observed._ all Christmas week while the usual later Friday and Saturday night No Permanent Action Taken At Tuesday Meet The city police situation took up most of the time of the City Board of Commissioners in their regular monthly meeting Tuesday after noon with Mayor Kelly Jenkins and Commissioners W. B. Allsbrook, M. D. Collier, E. B. Manning, R. I* Starke and G. N. Taylor present. Dr. T. W. M. Long appeared be fore the board and recommended the appointment of J. R. Adams as a police officer. Mr. Adams has been an extra officer for several months. Mayor Jenkins stated to the board that S. M. Jones and G. D. Wheeler had resigned as police of ficers and that W. M. Erwin, an extra officer, had been temporarily employed for a period of 30 days. Applications for police positions were received from the following! A. J. Brigman, Curtis King, C. L, Bristow, Bruce Camp, M. L. Hayes, Lynn Cameron, Roger H. Down ing, E. B. Ferguson, B. H. Bolin and E. P. Downe. A motion was made by W. B. Allsbrook that G. B. Wheeler ba suspended for a period of 30 days and that he then be reinstated* The motion failed for lack of g second. •#!; The board decided to postpond filling the vacancies now existing and Chief Dobbins was instructed to use the present special officers (Erwin and Adams) as regular of ficers for the next 30 days and td employ two applicants as special officers temporarily. A. J. Brigman was employed by Chief Dobbins later as a special officer.
