VULUMKJ TWENTI-XHIilfilfi KUAJNUKH; KAHUS, IS. t._XlUJJKiSUAy, June 9, 1938 NUMBER 48 " MYSTERY DEATH ! MURDER? SUICIDE? MAN DEAD 10 DAYS FOUND AT WELDON NEAR RIVER BANK The badly decomposed body of a man, tentatively identified a s Kaare Strand, of Oslo, Norway, was discovered suspended from the low limb of a tree about 30-yards from the banks of the Roanoke River in the dense undergrowth be tween the railroad bridges near Weldon by two small hoys in swim ming about 3:30 this afternoon. The man had evidently been dead for 10-days, or more. Dressed in expensive clothes, over $300 in U.S. currency and a substantial sum of Norwegian money was found in a coat which was discarded about 20 feet from the body. Authorities are definitely puzzled over the finding of the body as there was apparently no evidence of foul play, despite' signs of blood on the coat, and the large sum of money would tend to discount any theory of robbery. The position of the body tends to discredit the the ory he could have committed sui cide by hanging himself. Strand was a man of 6-ft. height, and obviously weighed 170 pounds or more. ALLSBROOK SLATE VICTORIES; REPORT ILLEGAL VOTING ALLSBROOK NOT TO CONTEST ALT HO CITIZENS REPORT WHOLESALE CORRUPTION AND BEG FOR RECOUNT * Julian R. Allsbrook, defeated for the State Senate by 171 votes out of nearly 10,000 cast, today refused his friends who asked that he contest the election Saturday on the basis of wholesale cor ruption, buying of votes, intimidation, illegal vot ing by those not entitled to vote in the county and illegal voting of certain absentee ballots. Mr. Alls brook stated among other reasons that his action might cause whole precincts to be thrown out and he would not be a party to disfranchising any voter. Meanwhile, the County Board of Elections, to whom complaints have come, had not certified the Saturday vote to the State Board this afternoon but were expected to after hearing of Mr. Allsbrook’s decision. Citizens interested in cleaning up the election situation in Halifax County were understood to be forming a Good Citizenship League with the idea of preventing a re currence of the type of voting said to have been done in the primary and bringing back honest and de cent elections to the county, free from bribery, intimidation and il legal voting. While Mr. Allsbrook lost by a close margin, his entire printed slate was elected to office. Those V_____——— on the Allsbrook slate were Wm. D. Holoman of Weldon and B. B. Ev erett of Palmyra, elected to the House of Representatives over the Long slate of Newton Shepherd and A. M. Atkinson. A. L'. Htut, who was swept into office by a wide margin over John H. Fenner; Judge John H. Kerr who carried the county 2 to 1 over T. T. Barnes of Wilson and Robert R. Reynolds who received a county majority of over 4,000 over Frank Hancock. The Allsbrook faction, long ac cused of not being able to carry a slate, altho heartbroken over the slim defeat of their leader, was happy when the Holoman, Everett, (Continued on Page 12) \ Members of House of Representatives Clerk of Superior Court Sheriff Representative in Congress For U.
