Mills Down
As Roanoke
River Ups
The Roanoke River, on another
rampage after ten days of steady
rain, reached a crest at Weldon of
plus 44 feet rise before starting to
drop rapidly today.
Water in the boiler room of
Roanoke Mills Co. No. 1 caused the
close down of half the mill yester
day and today. All departments
depending on steam were closed.
Part of the Halifax Paper Co. was
also down on account of the high
water.
Farmers in the lowlands are pre
paring to plant a new crop as
soon as the water recedes, some for
the third time this year. Dikes at
Caledonia held firm but some
breaks are expected when the wa
ters subside as the earthen bar
riers are heavily saturated.
Highways No. 1 and No. 301 were
closed to traffic in Virginia yester
day as the Nottaway and creeks
covered the highways.

while playing or scuffling with
playmates a little over three weeks
ago. Infection set in and he was

WOMAN DIES AFTER
HUSBAND HITS HER
James Davis Is
in Halifax Jail
Murder Charge
James Davis, 39 year old Negro
of Weldon, is being held in Halifax
County jail without bond, charged
with the murder of his wife who
died in a doctor’s office Tuesday
morning.
The Negro is charged with strik
ing his wife Saturday night and in
flicting a head injury which an au
topsy reveals may have caused her
death.
Arrested in Wilson on a capias
issued from Halifax County Tues
day, Davis was brought to Halifax
jail where Coroner Cooper, follow
ing the woman’s death, ordered
him held without bond. A pre
liminary hearing is set for next
Tuesday at Recorder’s Court.
When arrested, the Negro had
been placed under a $50 bond to
appear Tuesday on a charge of
simple assault.
It is reported that Davis and his
wife had an argument Saturday
night and he struck her. She had
a small cut about one inch long
in her scalp when she went to the
office of Dr. W. G. Suiter Satur
day night. He dressed the wound
and the woman was apparently all
right Sunday and was seen on the
streets. Early Tuesday morning,
she returned to the doctor’s office
before his arrival and went into a
coma there, dying a half hour lat
er.
It is said the autopsy will show
a crack in the skull, probably re
sulting from the blow. The wo
man was either struck on the head
with an instrument or bottle or she
received the injury in falling to the
sidewalk.
Martin Newsom
Dies At Home
Soon After Meet
Martin Newsome, 35 year old tex
tile worker of Roanoke Rapids,
died at his home suddenly last
night from a heart attack, a few
minutes after he had returned
home from the “healer’s” tent of
evangelist J. M. Creech on Madison
Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Newsom arrived
home a few minutes after eleven
o'clock. On the way down, Mrs,
Newsom says her husband com
plained of his head hurting. They
retired immediately and just before
11:30, she say? he sat up and asked
her to do something to help him.
She called for help and neighbors
came. Mr. Newsom was dead
when the doctor arrived. He had
rolled from the bed and neighbors
placed him back on the bed just
before the end came.
There was a small place on his
head, but it is not known whether
he sustained that in falling from
the bed or in a disturbance said to
have taken place on the platform
of the Creech tent.
Newsome had been acting as an
usher at the revival meetings of
the healer” and there was some
trouble reported with one man last
night, whose wife was in the pro
cess of being "healed”. Newsom
had sought to act as peacemaker
between the husband and the e
vangelist, according to some who
were onlokers at the meeting.
He is survived by his wife, Myr
