HOLD TEXAS 'TIL
8TH INNING ONLY
TO GO DOWN 9-5
Manager Jesse Lee of the Owls, who was forced to stay at
home on account of personal business, became so enthused over
Wednesday night’s win that he left early this morning for Rich
mond, where he will take an airplane for Wichita, arriving there
5:30 this afternoon, to be with his team for the balance of the
tournament.
Fifteen hundred ardent Owl baseball fans
gathered in front of Rosemary Drug Company to
night fully expecting the home-town team, enter
ed in the National Semi-Pro “World Series” in
Wichita, Kansas to crash through with their third
victory in a row—only to see the Owls go down to
defeat under the powerful Mt. Pleasant Texas
team.
However, the local fans—as well
as the Owis, out there in Wichita—
emerge with their spirits undaunt
ed and still contend that the Roa
noke Rapids team, on which the
eyes of the Nation are centered,
will "win out” yet.
Tonight's game was easily the
Owls’—up to that “awful" eighth
inning, when the Texans scored
nine runs off of eight hits to end
the score 9 to 5 in favor of the
Lone Star State team. Sending 15
men to bat in the momentous 8th,
the Texans proved too much for
their North Carolina adversaries,
and in a tournament full to date
of upsets, tonight's! defeat of the
C.vi>j -y th„ It. Pleasant team,
afLer not having been able to score
over the Owls a single time up to
the eighth, proved to be another
"upset.” A rather tough one for
the Owls, but one from which the
entire citizenry is highly hopeful
they will recover in the next game
to be played.
"Lefty” Davis, veteran Roanoke
Rapids hurler, pitched "air-tight”
ball up to the eighth inning, when
he was relieved by Joe Talley, who
seemed to be off form tonight, lat
er being relieved by Tom Taylor,

5 ESCAPE DEATH
WHEN LIGHTNING
STRIKES BUILDING
Garysburg
Teacherage
Total Loss
Five colored school teachers at
Garysburg miraculously escaped
serious injury and possible death
when lightning struck the “Teach
erage” in which they were staying,
about 7 o’clock Wednesday after
noon. The building, a two-story
wooden structure, was burned to
the ground, and all of the furnish
ings were a total loss.
Most seriously injured of the five
is Mabel Wells, who is, said to
have suffered severe burns and
shock, and is yet a patient at Roa
noke Rapids Hospital. The other
four teachers were, dismissftij^aft
>er being given first-aid treatment
at the Hospital.
' The injured includes the follow
ing: Dorothy Johnson, of Wilming
ton, Josie Harris, of Raleigh, Ro
berta Pay tor, of Washington, N, C.,
Gladys Key, of Seaboard, and the
afore-mentioned Mabel Wells,
whose home is in Rocky Mount.
The bolt of lightning struck the
teacherage during Wednesday aft
ernoon’s storm. So far as is known,
no other damage was done by
lightning in this immediate sec
tion. The Weldon Fire Department
answered the call, and were pre
pared to fight the flames with
chemicals and a booster pump, but
the fire had gained such headway
when they arrived at the scene that
there was little use to fight the
blaze.
Several of the teachers were
knocked unconscious when the
lightning struck, and all were rush
ed to Roanoke Rapids Hospital by
ambulance. The teachers were in
structing in the regular Mid-Sum
mer term of Colored School in Ga
rysburg.
