Little Business
Head Appoints
State Leaders
Raleigh, N. C„ Sept. 14.—Ap
pointment of Baxter Durham and
I. M. Bailey, both of Raleigh, as
Director of Organization and Law
Committee Chairman, respectively,
of the North Carolina Division of
the American Federation of Little
Business, was announced here to
day by Alfred Williams, State Di
vision Chairman.
Durham has established head
quarters here and will direct the
Federation’s membership campaign
in this state. Widely known
throughout North Carolina, he was
first elected State Auditor in 1920
and was re-elected for three subse
quent terms. He has also served
four terms as President of the Na
tional Association of State Audi
tors, Comptrollers and Treasurers.
As Chairman of the State Divi
sion’s Law Committee, Bailey will
recommend for appointment attor
neys from each of the counties of
the state. A native of Johnston
County, Baily practiced law in
Jacksonville before coming to Ra
leigh in 1931. He is President of
the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce,
former president of the Raleigh
Community Chest and was at one
time general counsel to the State
Corporation Commission and pres
ident of the North Carolina State
car.
The appointments round out the
structural organization of the
North Carolina Division, which is
similar to those set up in other
states. It includes an Advisory
Committee composed of chairmen
from each of the 11 Congressional
districts. Matt R. Bernhardt, of
Lenoir, is Vice Chairman of the
Federation and a member of its
National Governing Committee,
and Tyre Taylor, formerly of North
Carolina, is the Federation’s gen
eral counsel.
In announcing the appointments,
Chairman Williams said:
"The American Federation of Lit
tle Business, with national head
quarters in Washington, D. C., of
fers the independent small business
man the opportunity he has long
needed—of becoming affiliated with
a national organization designed
solely for the purpose of protecting
and advancing his economic wel
fare.
“This Federation, which has re
cived the endorsement of Governor
Hoey and other state leaders, is an
independent, non-profit and non
partisan organization. In addition
to the services it offers its mem
bership, it promises to be an in
strument by means of which the in
dependent man of business can
make his voice effectively heard in
matters that directly affect his bus
iness and his economic security.”
