NEXT WEEK AT ROANOKE RAPIDS THEATRES Mi——_ _ \_'__ Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power ******** STAR MARIE ANTOINETTE ******** * For Three-Day Run At The Peoples --... *,___ The long awaited “Marie An toinette” with Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power in the leading rales is scheduled for the Sunday-Tues day showings at the New Peoples. The 'supporting cast includes John Barrymore, Anita Louise, Joseph Schildkraut, Gladys George and scores of others. The story has gripping power on the screen because it is so simply told. Miss Shearer’s “Antoinette” is a girl eager to be in love and to be loved, who finds herself mar ried to a moronic husband, a role played by Robert Morley, young English actor making his first mo tion picture appearance. When he fails her and his country through weakness of mind and spirit, she seeks escape in mad pleasures and dangerous flirtations. But in the end, she cannot escape her destiny as the last Queen of France. Marie Antoinette will prove to be thoroughly entertaining. Pow er is a handsome, gallant and con vincing Count Axel de Fersen, the man who dared to love a Queen. There are moments of great drama and poignant tragedy, but also delightful comedy. Much of the humor is provided by Barry more, whose performance as the cynical, world-weary King Louis XV, is among his finest. * $ * * * * An ultra-modern story of a “quadrangle” supplants the age old tale of the triangle in a new bright and breezy comedy. It is “Three Loves Has Nancy,” dedeciated to hilarity and moving at a fast pace. It will be present ed to the Wednesday-Thursday patrons of Peoples. Janet Gaynor, Robert Montgomery and Franchot Tone offer a brilliant array of talent in the principal roles. Miss Gaynor gives a persuasive and sympathetic portrayal of a small town girl who is given an insight into the sophisitications of New York by Montgomery and Tone, her rivals in love. The story is that of a flippant novelist who gets into difficulties with a Broadway actress. In an endeavor to escape the overtures of the too eager admirer, he per suades his publisher to send him on a lecture tour of the South. Here he meets Nancy, a small town girl. Casually inviting her to seek his help should she ever get into trouble in New York, he for gets all about her, only to find her waiting at the penthouse apart ment he shares with his friend, the publisher, upon his return. The ensuing complications provide some of the fastest and merriest comedy seen this season. The supporting cast includes Reginald Owen as a haughty but ler, Guy Kibbee, Charley Grape win, Cora Witherspoon, Grady Sut ton, Claire Dodd and Emma Dunn. ****** Don Ameche and Arleen Whelan will be presented at the New Peo plaes Friday-Saturday in “Gate way.” This Grand Hotel idea bas ed on Ellis Island presents nu merous types who wish to immi grate to the United States. Aboard ship Don Amecne leaus Arleen Whelan into an Innocent but thrilling temptation which cul minates in a scandal that threat ens to bar the immigrant girl from the United States. The girl, along with a much divorced wo man suspected of moral turpitude, a political refugee, a radical, a gangster, a peasant family and Ameche, who contrives to have himself included, are detained for examination. As incidents por traying the heatbreak, joy and tragedy of those who either per mitted or denied entry into the country ensue, during which Greg ory Ratoff, Binnie Barnes, Gilbert Roland, Maurice Moscovitch, Fritz Leiber and Eddy Conrad appear to the film’s advantage, Ameche dedicates himself to securing per mission for Miss Whelan to land. Trying to clear the girl he now loves and save her from marriage to a worthless cad, he messes things up. But in preventing .the escape of a gang of deportees lead by John Carradine, he wins the gratitude of Commissioner Harry Carey and the sympathy of the girl who in marrying him auto matically becomes an American and entitled to all the country’s le gal liberties and privileges.
