Every day this week an interested crowd has gathered around the shovel which is tak ing the dirt from the sides of Roanoke Avenue preparatory to extending the Avenue pavement from curb to curb. Here The Herald photographer caught a group watching Tuesday, the first day the project started. In the street can be seen one of the several trucks which continually take the dirt from the shovel. (Herald NewsKut by Crumpler) HERE'S POPULATION PROOF POPULATION IpO THOSE of you, who like us, have trouble convincing people about the population of Roanoke Rapids may feel free to clip this picture of one of the official signs of the North Carolina State Highway Department at the city limits of Roanoke Rapids. This picture was taken last week by the staff photographer of The Herald and is of the sign at the Chockoyotte Creek city line on South Rosemary street. Confusion to outsiders comes from the fact they still read the 1930 census figures (8 years old) and taken before the combination of the old Roanoke Rapids and Rosemary in 1931. These official State Highway markers were placed after 1931, when that depart ment knew of the extended city limits. The above sign is one of the hun dreds of official signs placed at the city limits of all North Carolina towns and cities. (Herald NewsKut by Crumpler)
