The included area is the Western portion of Halifax County and the Eastern portion of Warren County and the name Fishing Creek was derived from the fact that the area was drained by the above-named stream and its tributaries. A ref erendum was conducted to deter mine whether farmers wished to establish a district. At this elec tion the land-owners voted almost unanimously in favor of such es tablishment. A charter was issued by the Secretary of State early in the spring; five supervisors were selected to operate the district, and the United States Department of Agriculture established the district office at Littleton, where six tech nical men and clerical help are head-quartered. These men are working out plans with cooperat ing farmers to include systems of cropping, soil management, pas ture improvement, terracing, re forestation and woodland improve ment, wildlife conservation, and other methods leading towards con trol of soil erosion and conserva tion of water. Considerable interest in soil con servation has developed since the establishment of Fishing Creek District. Petitions were filed with the State Committee on October 3, requesting that the remainder of Halifax and Warren counties be included within the district. As a follow-up to this, plans have been made to hold a series of education al meetings in the two counties for the purpose of explaining to land owners how the District may be enlarged, and what this will mean to the farmers. These discussions will be held jointly with those on the crop control referendum to be held December 10.
