The Negroes, riding in a 1935 Pontiac coach ( were headed to ward Weldon when their car ap parently got out of control and skidded head-on into a 15-ton truck belonging to a Louisiana fish concern and loaded with shrimp. Lloyd Rogers was the driv er of the truck. Thomas Davito of Atterson, La., was his helper. The impact of the crash jammed the car under the truck with such force the truck had to be moved before the bodies could be extract ed. Neither Rogers nor Davis was injured. The truck was damaged badly and the car demolished. SECRETARY Washington, D. C., January 19.— Joseph G. Butts, Jr., of Halifax, has been appointed Private Secretary to Congressman John H. Kerr, of the second district. Mr. Butts, who has been a member of the Kerr staff for the past eight years, suc ceeds the late Honorable Howard F. Jones, former State Senator from Warren County and veteran Kerr Secretary, who died recently at his home in Warrenton. Mr. Butts came to Washington during the Hoover administration and joined the Kerr office as a messenger, was later made Assis tant Secretary, and for several years has served as Clerk to the Committee on Elections, of which Representative Kerr was Chairman prior to his appointment as a Member of the Committee on Ap propriations. Mr. Butts is 27 years old, and although an experienced Capitol employee, is the youngest Private Secretary to any North Carolina Congressman. He attend ed the Washington School for Sec retaries at night and was awarded the degree of Bachelor of laws by National University here. LOCAL HAPPENINGS By Alligood
