VOLUME TWENTY-FOUR ROANOKE RAPIDS, N. C. _THURSDAY, FEB. 16, 1939_NUMBER 32
CHILD KILLED DY CUR
BOY HIT
IN WEST
ROSEM'RY
Waverly Haywood Twisdale,
three year old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Holland Twisdale, died Tuesday
night at 10:30 at the Roanoke Rap
ids Hospital from injuries received
when the child was struck by a
car Sunday afternoon.
The child suffered a fractured
skull, severe head cuts and a brok
en leg. The head injuries were
fatal, the boy never regaining con
sciousness after the accident.
The car was driven by Clarence
Ricks, Roanoke Rapids man, for
merly in the insurance business
here. Ricks said it was impossible
to miss the child who ran out in
the road in front of his car. This
theory seems probable according
to those who live near the child
and officers who investigated the
accident. City policeman Carl
Green investigated and reported to
State Highway Patrolman Roth
rock.
The Twisdale family lives in
West Rosemary near the Jim Wood
and Simmons places and the child
ran into the highway, in front of
his home. His frantic mother was
the first to reach him and carried
him to a nearby filling station
where the father was. Mr. Ricks
went back to the filling station and
offered the use of his car but an
other had already been offered to
carry the child to the hospital.
Funeral services were held this
afternoon at the home of the
child’s grandmother, Mrs. G. N.
Matthews, 63 Madison Street, by
the Rev. C. T. Rogers. Interment
was in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery.
The parents, a sister, Elva Sue, and
a brother, Benjamin, survive.
Patrolman Rothrock and Chief
Dobbins awaited Mr. Ricks yester
day afternoon after word had been
left at his home that a hearing
had been set for 10 o’clock Friday
morning. Ricks left the city at 4
o’clock yesterday afternoon and
had not reported to the officers
this morning. However, they ex
pect him to return for the hearing
Friday morning as no charges a
gainst him have been lodged.
