Sanitary Board; New Health Officer On Job; Clerk's Office Open Satur days From 9 To Noon; Interesting County Board Session Halifax County Commissioners’ regular monthly meeting was held March 6 with the following pres ent: Geo. C. Green, County At torney; J. YV. Whitaker, Chairman; N. W. Warren, W. J. Collier, M. W. Perry, J. R. Vv renn. SMITH TAX COLLECTOR On motion W. J. Collier, second ed by M. W. Perry, and carried that E. H. Smith is appointed tax collector and is requested to give a $65,000.00 bond and that he is to have four deputies to collect taxes and they are requested to give bonds of $5000.00 each. NEWSOM TO BOARD On motion J. R. Wrenn seconded by M. W. Perry and carried that M. C. Newsom of Roanoke Rapids is appointed a member of the Roa noke Rapids Sanitary District Board. TO AUDIT TAX BOOKS On motion, seconded and carried A. Lee Rawlings Co. of Norfolk, Va. is to audit the tax books of the County, check the Sheriff out and turn over all tax books to E. H. Smith, tax collector. NEW HEALTH OFFICER Dr. Sykes, new Health Officer, came before the board and dis cussed in general the work of the Health Officer and his plans for the future work. Cal Davis with Mr. McLendon (Continued on Page 12) Hold Three In Mill Cloth Theft Here Bill Scott, Lawrence Haley and Eulas Branch, all colored, were ar rested in Emporia, Va., Friday, charged with theft of cloth from Rosemary Manufacturing Co. The indictment was sworn out by Reginald Harris, Rosemary Mfg. Co. employee. Haley and Branch pled guilty before Mayor Jenkins Monday and are in Halifax jail in default of bonds of $200 each. Scott is out under a $100 bond on a finding of probable guilt at the hearing. One Not Guilty, Two Paroled In Local Car Theft Ernest Wood, Roanoke Rapids boy, was found not guilty in Rich mond Federal Court on a charge of car theft. Two others, Grady Les ter and Parrish, were put under three years probation. The three had been charged with stealing a car in Roanoke Rapids and driv ing it into Virginia. .. ■■ ' .... - --f+ff* ty • At press time tonight, 150 Lions and their ladies are meeting in Roanoke Rapids, guests of the lo cal club at the 3rd Anniversary Charter Night of that club. Guests from Lions Club of a dozen different cities are present to honor the local organization on its third birthday. The program calls for America, invocation by Lion Gordon Price, and the introduction of Lion Ted Speight as toastmaster by Lion Jack Cassada, program chairman. After a delicious banquet with music will come the introduction of Deputy District Governor Sam Alford and of the Zone Chairman Claud Bowers of Warrenton. The Civic Welcome will be given by Lion Scott Benton, presidents of guest clubs will be introduced. The principal speaker, Lion Neil Hester, will be introduced by Lion Bernard Alisbrook. After the program at the club, the assemblage will be guests of the local club at a theatre party at the Peoples Theatre. Details of the interesting features Chicken Trailer Hits School Bus And Keeps Going A driver hauling a trailer of crated chickens was arrested on a hit-run charge Tuesday by Patrol men Rothrock and Hines and lodg ed in jail at Jackson. T. Page, colored, of Fairmont, on his way to Norfolk with a load of chickens, failed to stop for a school truck near Conway. As he passed the truck, the trailer swayed into the bus. Page kept on going after hitting the bus despite the fact that he lost some of his chickena in the smash. He was arrested on his return trip. MRS. WIRTZ IMPROVED Mrs. J. R. Wirtz is able to be out again after being ill with fiu for two weeks. of tonight’s program will be pub lished next week.
