C. , THURSDAY, MAR. 30, 1939_NUMBER 38 * NEW GRANDSTAND added to Simmons Park and completed this week adds 70 per cent to grandstand seating of the home of The Owls. Ne\v stand is seen (with arrow) between the old grandstand and the bleachers which have been moved down to first base. Added also are rest rooms for ladies and men and new ticket booths. A new drink stand has been built between the old grandstand and the colored bleachers on third base. OUTSTANDING citizen of Roanoke Rapids in 1938, chosen by the Lions Club, was Frank II. Sherry, manager of local VEPCO, for his work as drive chairman for the 1938 Community Chest Fund. TO CHOOSE MAYOR AND 2 MEMBERS Notice of tlie regular city election to be held on Tuesday, May 2nd, when a Mayor and a Commission er from each Ward will be elected, was approved at an adjourned meeting of the City Board of Com missioners this afternoon. City registration books will be opened for the registration of vot ers, not now registered on the city books, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. start ing Saturday, April 15 and closing on Saturday, April 22. On Satur days the books will be at the poll ing places from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Officers and polling places des ignated were for the North Ward: Henry Fitts, registrar, E. A. Telli ga and Walter Woodruff, judges; at B. Marks Store building. For the South Ward: C. C. Shell, registrar, Allie Wood and Byron Gurley, judges; at 1025 Roanoke Avenue. SPECIAL The “marker bill”, with the Fol ger amendment cut out by a vote of 4 to 1 by tlie conference com mittee, passed the House today but the Senate tonight refused to pass the bill because the conference re port was not signed by Senator Folger. Just before midnight Thursday night, the truck coming into Roancke Rapids, skidded at the comer and plowed into a house. It tore the porch roof from the house and knocked down a VEPCO pole and transformer.
