Sykes, Halifax County Health Officer. Lois Ad cock of Ringwood and Robert Lee Cameron of Enfield ran them a close second in this contest. The runners up in this contest were selected by Dr. Sykes in each club in the County at a previous club contest. The winning boy and girl from each club competed in the County Contest. These County winners will com pete in the Northeastern District Health Elimination Contest for 4-H Club members in Trrboro on June 15. At this contest, the ditsrict Winners will be declared and will compete in the State Contest held at State College during the annual 4-H Short Course, July 24-29. These examinations are held each year as a part of the 4-H program in an effort tq help the club mem bers locate any physical defects and to correct them. Attention is called to posture, grooming, teeth, eyes, tonsils and adenoids. Cornelius Gums, Arthur Greene and Herbert Bryant, of Roanoke Rapids, spent Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mount. Mrs. H. L. Story, of Marshall, N. C„ spent the week-end in Roanoke Rapids with her son, L. L. Storey and family. 31 CASES TYPHOID IN COUNTY IN 1938, 36 OF DIPHTHERIA In Halifax County during the1 year of 1938 there were thirty-one cases of typhoid fever with four deaths, and thirty-six cases of diphtheria with three deaths. It is needless to say that these four deaths from typhoid fever and the three deaths from diphtheria were unnecessary. There are now ways of preventing typhoid fever and diphtheria, and deaths from these diseases, if only the public would avail themselves of the opportunity to receive the simple vaccination, which is free to everybody. It is the desire of the Halifax County Health Department that ev ery person from six months old to five years old have at least one dose of the diphtheria vaccination, and every person from two-and one-half years old up have the ty phoid vaccination.
