In revenge, he undertakes a similar I campaign of scandal-spreading a- ; gainst his rivals, and almost sue-j cecds. The story of that revenge makes “Whispering Enemies” one of the most novel and timely docu ments the two-fisted actor has ev er brought to the screen. 5}: sjc sfc * Tony Martin, Gloria Stuart, Hen ry Armetta and Slim Summerville will be seen Monday-Tuesday at the Imperial in “Winner Take All,” mixing comedy with romance and prize-fighting. Tony has the part of a cowboy stranded in town who gets a job as waiter in the lunch place run by Henry Armetta. Martin scores a lucky knockout in a benefit prize fight, and then is used as bait by a gambler who hands him a few set ups. Martin gets the swelled head, and the girl knows that he is rid ing for a fall. So she persuades a good fighter (Kane Richmond) who is finally matched against her hero, to knock him out and bring him to his senses. Then with his trainer (Slim Summerville) he gets down to hard training, with the gal’s encouragement, and finally works up to the point where he is good enough to meet the man that licked him. Then into the routine big-fight scene, with the hero tak ing a beating in the early rounds but coming back to score a knock . out. ****** "‘Romance of the Redwoods,” with Jean Parker and Charles Bickford in the leading roles will be seen Wednesday-Thursday at the Impe rial. Bickford is seen as a veteran lum berjack in love with Miss Parker. The logger sees the girl fall in love with a city-bred youth who had come north to try his luck in the timberlands. When a defective ma chine kills the boy, Bickford is ac cused of his murder. He is tried and released, after the girl has made a desperate appeal in his be half. But the townspeople remain con vinced of Bickford’s guilt, and he finds himself an outcast. When they turn against the girl as well, the logger decides to quit the woods he has known and loved. He is about to leave town when a forest fire breaks out. A crew of men are trapped be tween the blaze and the backfire they themselves had built to fight the flames. Bickford, the only man who can save them, refuses to listen to the pleas of those who had per secuted him. It is not until Miss Parker adds her own plea that the logger abandons his embittered de cision to let the men burn. Betty Furness and James Craig in “North of Shanghai” will com plete the program. Miss Furness, a reporter, is sent to Shanghai to keep out of danger of gangsters she had written articles about. She meets Craig, a fellow passenger, who was on his way to Shanghai to obtain newsreel pictures of the fighting. By the time they reach port they are very much in love with each other. Together they work on a case involving the man aegr of the Shanghai office of Miss Furness’ newspaper. After many exciting experiments they leave for New York, there to be married. $ * * * * * George O’Brien will be presented Saturday only in “Arizona Le gion.”' “Scouts to the Rescue” will be added. The refreshments carried out the bridal motif, white molded ice centered with a green wedding bell, cup cakes decorated in bridal bouquet. The favors were mints representing “planted” lily of the Valley. The high score prize for the evening was won by Mrs. Howard Pruden; the low prize was awarded Mrs. Sterling B. Pierce. The honoree was given a piece of, silver in Fairfax pattern. There were sixteen bridge guests and four other guests came in for refresh ments.
