LIFER IS CAPTURED
AFTER ESCAPE FROM
CALEDONIA PRISON
| I
William Barram, life-termer at
Caledonia, who escaped from the
prison farm Monday, was captured
in Weldon as he attempted to board
an outgoing Seaboard freight train
about 11:30 Wednesday night by
Roy Langley, guard at Prison Camp
No. 109, and Deputy Sheriff Jesse
Shearin, assisted by Roy Hamill,
Caledonia guard.
The capture of Barram climaxed
a relentless three-day search for
the prisoner, and the arresting of
ficers are to be highly commended
for their work in tracking down
and capturing their man.
Barram, it is reported, in some
; way managed to steal clothing sim
ilar to that worn by Grade “A”
■ prisoners, and thus equipped, he
1 slipped by prison guards.
| The prisoner has been returned
to Caledonia, to finish out his life
sentence, after his brief taste of
freedom. It yet remains a mystery
how he made his way from the
prison farm to Weldon, a distance
of some seventeen-miles, unless he
walked the entire distance—which
would have been under considerable
difficulty even in the dress of a
grade “A” prisoner.
With Matthews
Clifton Smith, well-known city
fountaineer and drug clerk, is now
employed with Matthews Drug
Company, and states he frill be glad
to see all of his old friends and
customers at his new location.
