This group is standing on the steps of the North entrance to the new building which has six classrooms, an office, a library and two toilets. Contractor Fred Forest is in the front row center, flanked by the six members of the County Board of Commissioners. ALREADY HERE IRVIN DICKENS of Roanoke Rapids, who graduated from Wake Forest College with high honors, captained his college baseball team, and arrived home the middle of this week to play second base for the 1939 Roanoke Rapids Owls. HERE TONIGHT HERBERT J. HERRING Dean of Men, Duke University, who tonight gave the Commence ment address to the largest class ever to graduate from Roanoke Rapids High School.' Earlier in the evening, Dean Herring ad dressed the local Kiwanis Club. Here Tomorrow ROY ROGERS The singing cowboy, Boy Rogers, who will be in Roanoke Rapids Friday as the guest of movie man ager Lyle Wilson. GEORGE NETHERCUTT of Roanoke Rapids, who arrives Saturday to catch for the Ow!U after a sensational season with Carolina. George will return to Chapel Hill Monday, graduating with highest scholastic and athletic honors. Scarborough Saturday; Tom Sunday Rae Scarborough, right handed speed ball artist of Wake Forest College and former McCrary Eagle pitcher, signed up yesterday with the Roanoke Rapids Owls and will open the season for the local team in the curtain-raiser at Simmons Park here at 3:30 Saturday after noon. Tommy (Lefty) Byrne, strike-out king of Southern college baseball this year, will throw his southpaw slants at Buford, Ga., in the second game of the series here Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Thus baseball opens with two bangs in Roanoke Rapids with the Owls, N. C. champions of semi-pro baseball last year, facing the Bona Allen Shoemen of Buford, Ga., 1938 National champions, here this weekend. Buford defeated Emporia of the Southside Virginia League at Em poria yesterday by a score of 1 to 0, the game called in the 6th on account of rain. Day before they defeated Colonial Heights of the same league by a score of 2 to 1. McLeod, University of Alabama, new Owl first baseman, left Ala bama today and should report for duty Friday. Pictures of Billy Gibson, flashy Georgia Tech shortstop, McCleod, Alabama first baseman, E. C. Cul breth, Spartanburg 3rd baseman, Owl pitching staff, will appear in the next issue. George Nethercutt, Carolina catcher, is due tomorrow. George graduates from the University next Tuesday. MR. PRESIDENT PAUL HARRIS president of the Owl Baseball Club of Roanoke Rapids, who will watch his boys meet Buford, Ga^ in the opener Saturday and will have charge of the ceremonies pre ceding the game. We hope Mr. President is wearing that sanw smile after Wichita.
