INSPECT NEW HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING HERE

the Roanoke Rapids School Board, the contractors and others were guests of the Kiwanis Club on
the day of acceptance of the new unit of the Roanoke Rapids High School. This group is standing
on the steps of the North entrance to the new building which has six classrooms, an office, a library
and two toilets. Contractor Fred Forest is in the front row center, flanked by the six members of
the County Board of Commissioners.

Rapids Owls.

open the season for the local team
in the curtain-raiser at Simmons
Park here at 3:30 Saturday after
noon. Tommy (Lefty) Byrne,
strike-out king of Southern college
baseball this year, will throw his
southpaw slants at Buford, Ga., in
the second game of the series here
Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Thus baseball opens with two
bangs in Roanoke Rapids with the
Owls, N. C. champions of semi-pro
baseball last year, facing the Bona
Allen Shoemen of Buford, Ga., 1938
National champions, here this
weekend.
Buford defeated Emporia of the
Southside Virginia League at Em
poria yesterday by a score of 1 to
0, the game called in the 6th on
account of rain. Day before they
defeated Colonial Heights of the
same league by a score of 2 to 1.
McLeod, University of Alabama,
new Owl first baseman, left Ala
bama today and should report for
duty Friday.
