THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 1939 NUMBER 48 When Roy Rogers, cowboy movie star, came to Roanoke Rapids by air from Hollywood last Friday, he received a royal welcome in what he con siders a great little city. Here he is with his arm around Mayor Allsbrook (left) and Theatre manager Lyle Wilson. FINES GO UP FROM 3 TO 5 AND IT'S CASH ON BBL HEAD State Gets $3,000 Back From Pauper A judgment was rendered in Hal ifax Superior Court today in favor of the N. C. State Hospital against Charles R. Daniel, guardian of Joe Harper. The judgment was for a hout $3,000. It seems that several years ago. Harper was confined to the insane hospital as a pauper. Later Clerk A. L. Hux discovered he had some property and ordered the guardian to file a report. The guardian re signed and when a new guardian was appointed, more assets were found; enough so the taxpayers of the State this week recovered a bout $3,000 of money they had spent to take care of the “pauper”. -I They Kissed the Queen and Vamped the King Mayor YV. Bernard Allsbrook, who took over his new duties as mayor of Roanoke Rapids Monday morning, went right to work and held his first court as judge of the city police court. Fifteen faced him Monday, most for public drunkenness, and the guilty were assessed a minimum of five dollars fine and the costs. As the boys say. the new Mayor has raised the price. Former minimum was three bucks. Worse for some offenders is that the Mayor s court is now on a cash or carry basis; you either pay the fine in cash or carry rocks. The new Mayor found a considerable amount of fines and costs, supposed to be paid “a little every Saddy”, had not been paid and immediate steps will be taken to issue capiases for collection of these past due accounts. All the fines collected in this court goes to county and city school funds and not to the city itself. The Mayor sent only ore case to Halifax. Richard Squire broke a brick on William Drumgold’s head and in default of $100 bond is in Halifax jail bound over to Recorder Court. Mayor Allsbrook stated his rea son for increasing the minimum fine and putting it on a cash basis was in the hope that it would cut out some of the regular weekend frolics of a few regular offenders. Thornton Gurkin, reported very ill. is to be taken to the State Sanitorium by ambulance this week. Largest Graduating Class Ira History Of Roanoke Rapids HERE they are, 94 of them, the 1939 class of Roanoke Rapids High School, largest class ever to graduate from the local High School. Last Thursday night closed a week of exercises, parties, awards and celebrations (mixed with tears) as this fine group finished Roanoke Rapids High School and commenced to plan for a new life. Roanoke Rapids is very proud of this fine .. its largest class. A salute to 1939. (Photo by Grant) • , ^
