Inmate Caught By Police This Morning Early Is Also Robbery Suspect Being held temporarily as a sus pect as one of the “Peeping Toms’* infesting Roanoke Rapids H. G. Whitehead, 25 year old Emporia, Va. man, was arrested in the early hours this morning by city police after he had been partially identi fied by various citizens as the man who peeped in their windows. The arrest was made at 3 a.m. by officer Jim Adams after suspi cious actions on Roanoke Avenue. He could give the officer no satis factory reason why he was prowl ing the streets at that time of the morning. He was checked by Of ficer Erwin in the South section when he left the Avenue and roamed Jackson St., turning back into the Avenue before he reached 4th. His story was that he was on his way to Emporia, hoping to catch a ride, and had slept part of the night in the Seaboard passen ger station, where he says he has spent many other nights on fre quent visits to this city in search of work. Similar prints were left at the Ethridge home on Hamilton St. where Mrs. Dorothy Shearin a woke to see a man peering in the bedroom window. She says the man wore glasses but there was a striking resemblance to the sus pect’s forehead and hair. Fingerprinted and grilled by the police today, Whitehead was found to have been an inmate of the Vir ginia Hospital for Insane on two different occasions at Williams burg. He claimed to have , visited a woman in Roanoke Rapids earlier last night and police have been unable to locate her yet to check on his story.
