Roanoke Rapids, Mayor Bernard AUsbrook announced today after lie had contacted Washington and ' gotten quick approval of the new project by WPA and President Roosevelt. The entire project will cost $65, 000 of which WPA is furnishing about $40,000. It will take one year to complete and will give em ployment to over one hundred men from WPA rolls. Present plans, subject to approv al of adjacent property owners, calls for asphalt surfacing of Sec ond St. from Hamilton to Jeffer json; Third St. from Jackson to Henry; Fourth St. from Hamilton to Charlotte; Fifth St. from Jack son to the Cemetery; Seventh St. from Hamilton to Williams; Eighth St. from Jackson to Vance; all of Tenth St. from East city limits to West city limits; Thir teenth St. from Hamilton to Jef ferson; curbing and gutter from 12th on Roanoke Ave. to the Sea board station; some storm drain age. City engineer Christie and E. S. Parker. WPA county supervisor, are now working up final plans, estimating material and men need ed in order to start work the mid dle of July. The original project was reject ed because of a 15 month project. Mayor Allsbrook changed plans and number of workers to bring the project within the 12 limit re quired by WPA which was approv ed by the State and sent to Wash ington. The Mayor then got in touch with Senator Reynolds’ of fice, asking that WPA be asked to rush the project thru. It was ap- v proved there last week and signed by the President on Friday. The project was returned to this State the first of this week and county officials got busy at once on final details in order to get as much work done this Summer as pos sible.
