m NEXT WEEK AT ROANOKE RAPIDS THEATRES "Invitation To Happiness" Co-Stars IRENE DUNNE »•••**»» With Fred MacMurray At Peoples Sunday - Tuesday the manage ment of Peoples Theatre will pre sent Irene Dunne and Fred Mac Murray in “Invitation to Happi ness”. MacMurray is cast as a prize fighter who is managed by Charlie Buggies. When Charlie goes to William Collier, Sr., for backing his boy, Fred meets Col lier Sr.’s daughter, Irene Dunne, a society girl who is more or less ac customed to having her own way. And so, Fred marries Irene. They are happy for a while, but their happiness soon yields to heart-break. Fred is determined to become champion of the world, and must leave Irene alone so that he can barnstorm around the fight circuit. While hs is away on one of his trips, a boy is born to the couple. As broken up as any wo man would be at the absence of her husband at such a time, Irene manages nevertheless to forgive him because she loves him so dearly. As the boy grows up, he comes to hate his father. He realizes that his mother does not relish his father's continued absence. Fred cannot understand the boy’s hate for him. Despite their separation, Fred and Irene love each other. Fred’s efforts to win the boy’s affection leads to a dramatic conclusion of the narrative. "Career” will be shown Wednes day-Thursday at Peoples Theatre with Anne Shirley, playing the role of the town banker’s daugh ter, and Edward Ellis, as the community’s leading storekeeper. The simple and homespun story of “Career” deals with life in the little Iowa town of Pittsville dur ing 1931. It offers a cross-section of that town and of its people in a compelling fashion. The leading players are aided by a host of capable players—Samuel S. Hinds, Janet Beecher, Leon Er rol, Raymond Hatton and John Qualen—and two clever young newcomers, Alice Eden and John Archer, final selections in the first “Gateway to Hollywood" talent search. Ellis, long a rival of the banker, Hinds, suspects the latter of crook ed work at the bank and draws out all his funds, thus precipiating the closing of the institution. The local feud that follows, and the solution of a brace of romances all make for the absorbing situa tions of “Career.” * * * * * * Sandy, the baby of “East Side of Heaven” will be seen Friday-Sat urday at Peoples in her second pic ture, “Unexpected Father.” Mischa Auer will furnish plenty of laughs in his role of a theatre doorman, and the romance is beau tifully handled by Dennis O’Keefe and Shirley Ross. Briefly, the story is about an orpiianed baby who is taken in by a group of theatre employees. Their decidedly unconventional methods of taking care of him and their rivalry for her smiles result in good entertainment from start to finish.
