r I The Romancos will play in Ra leigh Saturday night at Red Dia mond. The original idea was to play the Navy Yard in Portsmouth Saturday afternoon shift to Nor folk and play the strong Royal Crown Cola team Saturday night and stay over and play the Naval Training Station on Sunday after n o o n. However, arrangements could not be made for the Satur day night game so it was called off until the following week. The Romancos will take on Lewis Sporting Goods on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and will jump back here for a tilt Sunday with the RC Cola Outfit from Norfolk, Va, The time 2:30 p.m. The place Ledgerwood Park. —o— Saw Bill Riggans’ strong Dr. Pepper outfit take on the Rose mary Bees last Wednesday at Ledgerwood Park. The Bees beat them 8-0 but it was a swell ball game. The kids really look good out there and we think Mr. Rig gan has something on the ball. —o— The Romancos defeated the strong Norfolk Navy Yard Soft ball team last Saturday at Sim mons Park 1-0. Lindsay Sadler’s home run smash saved the day for the Romancos. Russ Deberry and "Swink” Lee pitched stellar ball for the Rosemary outfit. —o— Bill Jenkins and his Rosemary Bees are really looking good in the City Softball League. The Bees defeated Patterson in the first game at Ledgerwood and then cracked down on Oakley Vaughn and his No. 1 outfit last Tuesday. Sunday the Bees are on the road travelling to Henderson to play the strong Henderson All Stars. —o— H. B. "Ted” Speight is cooking up a nice little trip for the Ro manco A and Bee squad. It seems that Murfreesboro has organized a four team Softball League and | they have installed lights. The fans down that way want to see Russ Deberry and Swink Lee pitch so they have asked Ted to bring a couple of teams down for a game. Saturday a group of fans came all the way from Murfreesboro to see the game. —o— There will be Bingo every other Friday night at the Rosemary Rec reation Club. A large crowd at tended the first games last Friday night and were well pleased with the prizes. The games are in charge of Wiley Connell, Virgil McDowell and Willis Matthews. A mistake was made last week when the writeup said Bridge Tourna ment. —n— Hopewell All Stars are looking for games on a home and home basis. Any softball teams inter ested write Bob Ashton No. 2 Brown Apartments, Hopewell, Va. —o— Roanoke Rapids should be proud of their American Legion Junior team. Weldon should be equally proud of theirs, as it is a joint affair. The boys are really hust ling out there under Coach Cran ford Hoyle. If they do not run in a strejsk of hard luck I will say that a State Title is not far away. I saw my first game last Saturday and they have a real junior club out there. —o— SPORTORAMA. This City league race is going to turn out in a red hot race before the sea son is over and if the boys pick an All Star outfit from the league as they say, they are going to be rough and tuff and full of fleas.— Raleigh says that they will pay the expenses of the winning club to the National Tournament in Chicago—if and when they are a warded the State Tournament— Bon Voyage. Asheville. Charlotte, Raleigh or Greensboro, we hope that it will be interesting—Pilot with Manager Ken Guilfoyle on the mound will oppose the Greens boro Lawyers Saturday night after the Romanco-Lewis tilt.—Here’s hoping the Owls will hoot over High Point—And that a certain gentleman in a brown ensemble will go to Wichita and then to Porto Rico—and on—and on. Joint Hostesses Mrs. W. C. Williams and Mrs. T. B. White delightfully entertained with two bridge parties on Wed nesday afternoon and Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Wil liams on Hamilton Street. Throughout the spacious living room and dining room of Mrs. Wil liams’ home bowls of mixed flow ers presented a lovely scene. At tractive tallies were given the guests on arrival and places were found for playing at six tables. On Wednesday afternoon the high score prize was won by Mrs. J. M. Jackson and second high by Mrs. J. R. Allsbrook and the guest list included: Mesdames Pierce of Weldon, T. J. Alford, J. R. Alls brook. J. T. Chase, Heath Lee, T. W. M. Long, O. Griffin, W. H. Hundley, J. M. Jackson, Crocker Maddry, Alfred Martin, Virgil Mc Dowell, B. E. Stephenson, T. J. Taylor, Robert Vaughan. Claud Cannon, Frank Wilson, Lyle Wil son, Cranford Hoyle, Frank Wil liams, J. H. Harrell, Bernard Alls brook, Talton O’Bryant, and Lew Yerger. On Wednesday evening the guests were: Mesdames D. E. Ben nett, W. H. Proctor, Roderick Mei kle, Ben Parker, Wyche Land, Thornton Wilson, W. E. Murphrey, Frank Vaughan, Ray Rogers, M. F. White, Clyde Liske, George Hayes, Wm. Thorne Jr., Elmer Starke, Pendleton Grizzard, Gertrude Traynham, L. B. Brown. O. Grif fin, R. A. Daniel, Misses Ruth Transou, Lucille Carlon, Virginia Jackson, Floriene Holt and Vir ginia Blount. The prize winners for Wednes day evening were Mrs. W. H. Proctor for high and Mrs. L. B. Brown second high. During the progressions of contract very re freshing punch was served and after presenting the prizes a de lightful salad course was enjoyed. Floral tallies were : used and lovely flowers decorated the living room where three tables of progressive contract were in play. Mrs. W. B. Burchette re ceived the high score for club members and Mrs. Max Meyer the high for visitors. Each was pre sented a set of tea glasses. The honor prize, tea coasters, was won by Mrs. Bennie Bobbitt. Mrs. T. E. Hofler celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, July 5th, with a three course dinner at six o’clock. Guests were members of her family, and Joseph Branch, who was also celebrating his birth day on that day. Mrs. Hofler was the recipient of many lovely gifts. Five students will represent Jreensboro College at Lake Juna uska July 11-22 as delegates to he Young Peoples Leadership Conference. Among them is Miss Sara West Davis, daughter of Mr. ind Mrs. W. O. Davis of Weldon, rhis eleven day conference has a wo-fold purpose. A program of itudy and activity for church and :ampus leaders as well as the on going work of the Youth Crusade, vill be followed by approximately !our hundred young people from ihurches and colleges throughout :he south. A number of outstand ing adult leaders will be on the staff to help carry out the program of the conference.
