CM I Vj 5C I l? Roanoke Rapids should be a big city on the map. as far as Baseball and Softball are concerned for this reason: I don’t like to make a prophecy, but woujdn’t it be great if the Textile Owls copped the Semi-Pro Baseball tournament at High Point and Wichita to make them the United States Semi-Pro Champs? The Romancos look like a cinch to take the National as well as the State Softball Cham pionship, and Coach Hoyle, and his American Legion team, sure have a swell chance at some kind of title. Now if only I could get the Dr.Pepper Juniors in the Ju nior Softball tournament that is to be held in Dayton, Ohio, I think Roanoke Rapids would have a swell chance of winning that title also. o This Dr.Pepper Junior team is made up of boys from all over the city and represents some of the finest ball players of tomorrow'. The boys range in age from 12-16 and their average weight is 118. They have been given a blue and white uniform by Mr. Hines, Man ager of the Dr.Pepper Bottling Co. and these lads not only have a good team but make a good show on the field. The team has had only one defeat this season and that by a team of men at Rocky Mount. The Juniors swamped Gicl •Ray and his outfit 6-1 Friday and [again 11-7 Monday, Clifton Wrenn, I shortstop for the Juniors is credit ed with a homer, two three-baggers and two singles in the latter game. The Juniors boast three pitchers, Lloyd Nethercutt, Knox Rogers and Francis Everett; two catchers, Furman Burke and Waverly Jen kins; infielders Hasty, Worsham, Jenkins, Parks, Hodges and Wrenn; outfielders Moore, Poin dexter, D. Hastey, Wheeler. Neil, Lee and Hoggard. At the weekly meeting of the Dr.Pepper Juniors Saturday, July 1, at the Recreation Hall, the Ju niors had as their guest speaker Tommy “Lefty” Byrne, star south paw of the Owls Semi-Pro Base ball Club. Tommy gave the lads some sound advice about Athletic Training Rules and the effects of cigarette smoking on an athlete. Tuesday night, July 11, the Club had as its guest speaker Ben “Mac” McLeod, third baseman of the Owls. “Mac” as many of you know, is a graduate of University of Alabama and is now Coaching at Brewton High School, Brewton, Alabama. In a fine coaching style “Mac” spoke to the boys on the subject “Team Cooperation". The Dr.Pepper Juniors and I take this opportunity of thanking Mr. Byrne and Mr. McLeod and look forward to having both as their guests in the near future. Rapids-Weldon Club Wins, Clinches Semifinals Spot T li r e e-Run Rally in Eighth Inning Decides 6-3 Battle With Caps By EDWIN PERRY T li e Roanoke Rapids-We Won American Legion Junior baseball entry, by a 6-3 victory over Ra leigh's Juniors here Tuesday, ad vanced to the semifinals of play in the eastern half of the State. The Rapids-Weldon team de feated the Capital City boys in three consecutive games—13-2, 6-5, and 6-3 to win the right to play the winner of the Burlington-Wil soti series in semifinals. The Ciips scored one run in the first inning and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead. But Catcher Dallas Wright, who hit the single that beat the Caps in an 11-inning game last Saturday, started his teammates on the victory march with a home run in the fourth. The visitors scored one in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the count ai 3-ail. The Caps gave the visitors a real -scare Ms the ninth inning. With two men out, Shortstop Dooley Taylor errored Willis’ grounder. Jim Oliver singled, and Willis went to third. Oliver stole second. Then Secondbaseman A1 Frick smacked a long fly that looked like a sure homer, but Leftfielder Billy Rabil ran almost under the cedars next to the foul line and snagged the ball. Dallas Wright connected for a triple which drove in the sixth inning run to go with his homer to lead the Rapids boys at bat. Harvey Hinnant, Cap first-sack er, hac’ a perfect day both at bat and afield. He hit safely in his two turns at bat and handled eight fielding chances perfectly. And to make a day of it, his two singles drove in all three of the Cap runs. The Rapids-Weldon team, repre senting the William Shaw Post No. 38 of the American Legion, was organized last year, with play ers t coming mostly from the schools of Roanoke Rapids and Weldon. Coach Cranford Hoyle, for the past several years director of athletics at the Roanoke Rap ids High School, has been in charge of the team since it was organized. He coaches the juniors in conjunction with his playground work in the city of Roanoke Rap ids. This year the local team has won 13 out of 15 contests played in le gion competition. Next week they will meet the winner of the Bur lington-Wilson series for the semi finals of the East.
