MORE RIDES WILL
BE ON MIDWAY AT
LION'S FESTIVAL
With the big outdoor advertising
program getting under way this
week, together with final arrange
ments being perfected for shows
and attractions, everything points
to one of the most successful Lions
IVlid-Summer Festivals this year.
This announcement was made the
first of the week by Chairman Ted
Speight, who adds that his com
mittee has practically completed
their job of advance-arrangements
for the big show to be held here
week of August 7th to 12th. “The
committee as a whole has finished
their job,” added Speight, “and it
now remains for individual mem
bers appointed by them to carry
out their respective tasks.”
However, there is still a lot of
work to be done, though the Lions
are going about it this year in a
most systematic way, probably
profiting from the experience gain
ed in promoting the last two Fes
tivals.
A check-up with Mrs. Edwin A
kers, in charge of the advance gate
admission tickets, reveals the fol
lowing young ladies actively inter
ested in ticket sales: Katherine
Wood, Fannie Stephenson, Ophelia
Chambliss, Carrie Byrd, Frances
Ricks, Evelyn Johnson, Elizabeth
Wilson, Christine King, Agnes
Wood, Lucille Butler, Elmer Daw
son, Helen Wheeler, lone Rhea,
Wilda Crickmore, Helen Stewart,
Willie Pearl Love, Jane Kidd, Cle
ta Lewis and Victoria Vester.
In spite of the fact that these
young ladies are not only thor
oughly combing the Roanoke Rap
ids field, but also making a con
certed effort to sell tickets in the
nearby towns, it is still “anybody’s
race,” according to Mrs. Akers.
There is still ample time to enter
the contest and compete for the
honors, as well as the valuable
prizes, to be awarded “Queen of
the Festival” and the “runners-up”
in the coveted race. In addition,
a guaranteed cash commission is
assured all who remain active in
the contest.
The Lions will base their main
appeal for attendance to their an
nual “Festival” this year upon the
fact that a “bigger and better”
midway will greet visitors. Replete
with the very newest, cleanest
shows, together with the most mod
ern riding devices, the Crescent
Amusement Company, a North
Carolina outdoor show organiza
tion, comes to Roanoke Rapids
fresh from a most successful sea
son, and with their number of
shows, rides and concessions great
ly increased over former years.

Daring Escape from German

HUNTED by all the police ill Germany, he
found refuge in the heart and home of this

You’ll be held breathless by this exciting story
of escape from a German prison camp. You’ll
be thrilled and fascinated by this romantic girl
who took such desperate chances to hold the
only tender, sincere love she ever knew . .. No

ager for Crescent, in a recent in
terview said, “My company regards
the Lions Mid-Summer Festival in
Roanoke Rapids as one of our fea
ture engagements of the year. Our
show has been greatly added to
this year, and we are glad to be
back again working with the Lions,
as we feel this is one of the livest
organizations in the state, and one
most intent upon putting over their
annual show.”
Husted went ahead to explain
that his company had been able
to add greatly to the equipment
they carried this year due to the
increased interest in outdoor shows,
prompted by the unprecedented in
terest in outdoor shows brought
about by the two World’s Fairs.
“It is only a natural consequence,”
Husted said, “that scores of at
tractions have been built up with
the expectation of exhibiting at
New York or San Francisco this
year. Naturally there is not room
for all, and this ’overflow’ of talent
and new ideas is wending its way
even into the smallest so-called
‘carnival attractions.’ You will
definitely find the ‘World’s Fair in
fluence’ among our shows, and we
believe we will give patrons of the
Lions Mid-Summer Festival a
taste of some of the best attrac
tions at the two Worlds Fairs.”
A special advertising section of
the Herald will be issued next week
as advance publicity for the Mid
Summer Festival. It is also ex
pected that ticket sales by the girls
will reach “feverish heights” next
week, and during the week of the
show, as those are the weeks when
competition runs the highest.
The last two Queens of the Lions
Festivals are among the contest
ants again this year, namely, Miss
Victoria Vester, Queen of the 1937
Festival, and Miss Helen Stewart,
who reigned as Queen last year.
Interest in ticket sales and at
tendant rivalry as to who will be
Queen manifested itself this week
among all of the athletic and rec
reational organizations of the city.
It became known that the Roanoke
Mills Co. No. 2 Softball team will
sponsor a girl entry for Queen
honors, and has a goodly number
of votes with which to start off
the lucky young lady, though as
yet her identity has not been re
vealed. Anyone interested in the
