This year they decid ed to take the $500 award offered the winner by F. C. Williams and go to the New York Worlds Fair. LAKEY DIES OF INJURIES Was Riding Running Board of Automobile Tuesday Night Otwa Linwood Lakey, 21, eighth traffic victim in Halifax County within the current year and second within the month of August, died in the Roanoke Rapids Hospital about 3:00 o’clock Wednesday morning as a result of an automo bile-truck smashup which occurred on Roanoke Avenue near the old I canal at 11:10 Tuesday night. Lakey, who had been employed by Roanoke Mill No. 1 since Octo ber 1936, was riding on the left running board of a car driven by Robert Clay, also an employee of the Mill, when the car and a truck driven by Otis Taylor, colored, ran together on the Avenue near the old canal. The left fender of the car ran under the truck body, ap parently throwing Lakey into the truck and fracturing his skull. He was carried to the Roanoke Rapids Hospital where his condition was not considered serious at first. Lat er he sank into a coma and died about 3:00 o’clock. The young man’s father, J. W Lakey, of Danville, Va., was called to Roanoke Rapids but did not (Continued on Page 12, Sec.
