death.
The truck involved in the tragedy
was loaded with pulpwood on the
way to the Paper Mill. It was op
erated by Otis Taylor, colored, and
owned by C. H. Wrenn, a local
trucking man. With the truck
driver was another colored man.
The car involved had four people
in it besides the driver and Lakey
who was standing on the running
board.
A hearing in the case will be
held in Police Court in the Munici
pal Building Monday morning.
Funeral services for Lakey were
held this afternoon in Danville, Va.,
his former home.
The deceased, who has made his
home since he has been in Roanoke
Rapids with Leo Burton at 214
Madison Street, is survived by his
Barents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lake>
of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Mrs.
Catherine Moore and Eleanor Lak
ey of Danville; three brothers, Ray
mond, Allen, and Junior Lakey of
Danville, Va.

The city Board of Commissioners
took up the proposed budget for
the fiscal year in a regular ad
journed meeting last Tuesday aft- '

Mew Lunch Room
At 13th Street
A new lunch room has been o
pened in the new building at Roa
noke Avenue and Thirteenth
Streets, at the rear of Duncan’s
Grocery Store, by Bob Cole.
The place has been fitted up as
a modern, up-to-date lunch room,
with steam tables, spacious booths
and counter in the front, and an
adequate kitchen in the rear.
"Les” Worsham, wel-known Roa
noke Rapids cook, will be in charge
of the kitchen, while the place will
be actively managed by Mr. Cole,
its proprietor.
They will specialize in all kinds
of sandwiches, as well as regular
meals and short orders. Curb ser
vice will be offered to motorists.

City Clerk Ruby Wood leaves to
morrow for League of Municipali
ties Convention at WrightsviUe
Beach. She was invited to serve
as secretary to the city clerk and
finance officer conference at a
breakfast meeting Saturday morn
ing. Miss Wood has gained wide
popularity throughout eastern
North Carolina by her never-tiring
courtesy and unstinted cooperation.
CHINA GROVE MAN IS
IN HOSPITAL WITH
FRACTURED VERTEBRA
Cecil C. Graham, banker of China
Grove, North Carolina, is in the
Roanoke Rapids Hospital suffering
from an injured vertebra of the
neck. He received the injury as
his automobile skidded on the wet
pavement on Highway 58 about 20
miles east of Emporia, Va., last
Sunday night. In the car with him
was his niece, Miss Josephine Ran
kin, of China Grove, who escaped
unhurt.
Mr. Graham and Miss Rankin
had been to Norfolk to visit friends
and relatives for the week-end
when the accident occurred. The
car overturned twice.
Mr. Graham, who is president of
the Bank of China Grove and sec
retary of the Rowan County Build
ing and Loan Association, is a
relative of S. N. Graham, the new
ly elected principal of the Roanoke
Rapids Junior High School. Mr.
and Mrs. Graham of this city are
away on their vacation. Miss Ran
kin is staying in the city for a few
days.
The condition of the injured man,
who suffered no injuries other than
the fractured vertebra, is not con
sidered serious.
Mr. Graham is unmarried.
Carpenter Opens
Headquarters In
City For Taxes
R. O. Carpenter, deputy tax col
lector for Roanoke Rapids Town
ship, for Halifax County, announces
this week that his Saturday head
quarters will be located at Mur
ray’s Sinclair Service Station, Roa
noke Avenue, until further notice.
Mr. Carpenter will maintain
headquarters at the Uptown station
for the convenience of city resi
dents wishing to pay their taxes
here instead of having to go to the
County Seat. He will be fully pre
pared to issue receipts, and may be
seen at the Station between the
hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sat
urdays.
