NEW GRAND JURY SUBMITS FIRST REPORT TO COURT Cites Complaints About Women s Rest Room The newly selected grand jury for Halifax County made its first report to the Hon. Everett Thomp son, presiding judge for the current term of Superior Court, after fin ishing their investigation. The jury will serve until January 1940. The foreman for the newly selected jury is Jay W. Sanders, well known Roanoke Rapids man who is con nected with the Rosemary Manu facturing Company here. Following is the jury's report in full: Halifax, N. C., August 15, 1939 To the Hon. C. Everett Thompson, Judge Presiding: We, the Grand Jury for Halifax County, beg to submit the following report: We have passed upon all bills which have been brought to our attention to the best of our ability. Before the opening of the schools in September all the buses to be used for the purpose of transport ing children to and from school will be thoroughly inspected. The foreman of the Grand Jury will meet with the drivers of buses for the white schools on September 1st, and with the drivers of buses for the colored schools on September 8th and try to impress upon them their duties and the necessity for safe driving during the coming school session. An examination oi me ^uum.y Home revealed it to be in the best possible condition, and the Super intendent very much interested in his work. We found the jail as nearly in perfect condition as it is possible for a jail to be kept, and wish to commend the jailor for the excel lent performance of his duties. We found the office of Register of Deeds in good condition, and at the present time WPA workers are engaged in indexing birth and death certificates which has been long needed for ready reference. This work is being financed by the Federal Government, the only ex pense to the County being for ma terial used for the work. We found the office of the Clerk of the Superior Court in its usual good condition. With the aid of WPA funds the old Wills of the county from 1869 to 1930 have been "checked and filed numerically for easy reference, thus bringing this ■work up to the time when Wills were begun to be checked and filed numerically. Special Proceedings and Annual Accounts of years gone by have also been checked and filed numerically. The only ex pense to the County has been for material used. The following Justices of the Peace and Mayors have failed to file reports: J. L. Bellamy, W. A. Carter, E. E. Stallings, J. R. Taylor and Kelly Jenkins. Numerous complaints have been presented to us about the unsani tary condition of the public and private rest rooms for women in the Courthouse. Never in the his tory of the State has need for san itary rest rooms been more appar ent than at the present time, and we earnestly request that this mat ter be given immediate attention, as it is the intention of the Grand Jury to inspect rest rooms period ically and not merely at the terms of court, for their maintenance is as important as providing suitable rest rooms. Respectfully submitted, J. W. Sanders, Foreman. Mesdames W. B. Sykes of Frank lin, Va., G. R. Stephenson and l3la Hodge of Severn were recent guests of Mrs. W. A. Vincent. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Babcock and son, Phil, of Whitakers, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H.
