POLICIES
GIVEN IN
MEETING
Wiley C. King, newly appointed
Fire Chief, called a meeting of the
24 (members of the Fire Depart
ment last night to have a round
table discussion of the policies of
the Department under the new
head. Chief King told the assem
bled firemen that he expected to
proceed along the same lines that
the Department had been following
during the past few years, at the
same time asking the men to co
operate fully and to put aside any
petty jealousies that might impair
tile efficiency of the entire Depart
ment. He assured the firemen that
CHIEF W. C. KING
there would be no firing and hiring
as long as they continued to give
satisfactory service.
Mr. King was officially notified
by Mayor Allsbrook of his appoint
ment as Chief Tuesday about 7:15
p.m., the first fire alarm under his
administration going off before the
Mayor had finished talking to him.
At the present time there are 24
men in the Fire Department be
sides the Chief. Two of those men
are regulars, staying at the station
at all times and receiving a salary.
One acts as the night man and one
as the day man. Four of the other
18 volunteers sleep at the station
every night. They are furnished a
free room for their services.
The new Chief said last night
that the Department would be
through its year’s required practice
next week, having carried out the
23rd one of the 24 required yester
day evening at 6:00.
Mr. King, who is at present em
ployed as a card cutter in the
Rosemary Manufacturing Compa
ny, came to Roanoke Rapids from
Littleton in 1922. Prior to his ap
pointment as Chief, he had served
at one time as a volunteer fireman
for a period of about 15 months.
