Oct. 3, 1939 Dear Editor, Will you kindly have this print ed in your paper. A few days ago as I was talking with several people, the question was brought up as to whether store clerks should be allowed to sit down and rest when not wait ing on a customer, or should they be made to stand around and wait for a customer to come in? There Were seven people in the group who entered the discussion. Out of this seven four were for resting when there were no customers present. The other three were for standing all through the day until the day’s work is done. It appears that out of this seven three were not connected in any Way with a store only as a custom er. The four who were for resting when not busy argued that when a clerk had been resting it would be much easier to jump up and wait on the customer with the interest and courtesy that each customer expects. The other argument is— A clerk that has stood on his feet all day long will naturally feel tired and worn out from standing around and will be much slower in waiting on a person when one walks into the store. I can also add that I believe (to my mind) a customer will notice a person much quicker if they are sitting down and at the proper time they jump up to assist them. I understand there is a law that managers of stores are supposed to have chairs for their help. Yours truly, Charles Richards. At Asheville Mrs. I. D. Wood, Mrs. B. E. Bob bitt, Mrs. G. C.
