*THAT Roanoke Rapids is now enjoying a
veritable “building boom” is very apparent, as the
above scenes, taken the first of the week by the
Herald’s roving cameraman readily disclose.
UPPER LEFT photo shows the construction
work now in progress of the new wing to the Rose
mary Manufacturing Company offices. The work
is progressing rapidly, and will soon be completed,
giving the mill offices much-needed additional
space.
UPPER RIGHT you see the steam shovel
“digging in” on the large excavation job for the
basement of the building being built by J. Winfield
Crew, Jr., at the corner of Roanoke Avenue and
Tenth Streets. Our cameraman caught the shovel
as it was loading one of the many trucks used to
transport the dirt to Crew’s Chaloner Park devel
opment. Plans call for a full basement for the
75xl40-ft. two-story building, which is to be com
pleted by February 1st. Crowds of curious on
lookers have watched the shovel all week as it re
moved ton after ton of dirt. Excavation work was
halted today because of rains, but work will soon
resume, it is said.
LOWER LEFT you see the new, modern brick
front to Johnson’s Laundry plant located at South
Rosemary. When completed, this will be one of the
inpst modern laundry and dry cleaning plants in
Eastern North Carolina.
« LOWER RIGHT is the best view it seemed
possible to get of the new Sunday School building
of the Presbyterian Church. Because of the growth
of trees in front of the building it is practically im
possible to obtain a good photograph. The build
ing will be occupied by November 1st, it is thought,
and is located directly behind the church building,
fajcing Fifth Street.
