NEW COMMISSIONER Rich Square Murder ■ - ■ - COLORED MAN IS SLAYER Beaten about the head, his nose broken, and a gaping shotgun Wound in his neck, H. W. Elliott, 48, barber and farmer of Rich Square, was found dead in the yard of his colored tenant, Dolly Lee Hudson, this morning about 8:00 o’clock by a party of men who had been alarmed by. Mr. Elliott’s Wife when he failed to come home last night. Hudson, Mr. Elliott’s automobile, his pocketbook, and Valuables were all missing. Late today Hudson had not been locat ed, but the Elliott car was found in Petersburg, Va. Mr. Elliott left Rich Square Wed nesday night about 7 o’clock with Hudson and another man in the car with him. The third party, • Who got out of the car a short distance from Rich Square, told in vestigating officers today that El liott and Hudson were having some sort of argument about some money or a check when they left him at his home between town and the home of Hudson. Mrs. Elliott became alarmed when Mr. Elliott failed to come home late in the night. A searching party was formed and the slain man was dis covered in the yard of the tenant, about two miles from the Elliott home. Officers immediately sent out Word over eastern Carolina and Virginia for the arrest of the col ored man. The Elliott car was lo cated in Petersburg today, but Hudson is still at large. Fisher, for the past four years pastor of the Roanoke Rapids Methodist Church, will move his family to Lumberton next Tuesday, taking up the work in his new church, the Chestnut Street Methodist Church of Lum berton, the following Sunday. Mr. Fisher goes to Lumberton as a re sult of the changes made in the Methodist Church at the recent annual conference, held this year at Fayetteville, N. C. Mr. Fisher came to Roanoke Rapids in 1935 from Mount Gilead. Among the accomplishments of the church under him was the dedica tion of the church building free of debt in 1937. When Mr. Fisher came here there was an indebted ness against the church for $8,000. i (Continued on Page 12, Sec. A) I SAFETY MEET MONDAY NIGHT A meeting of the Roanoke Rap ids Safety Council will be held at the Municipal Building at 7:30 Monday night to hear a report of the committee appointed recently to draw up constitution and by laws and a plan of organization. All those present at past meetings are urged to be present to hear this report and accept or reject same. Chairman F. M. Sherry also has other matters of importance which must be decided on Monday night in regard to a special pro gram in December. The local Safety Council will be affiliated with the State Highway Council, of which Ronald Hocutt is director. NewsKuts by Brigman) LISKE IS CHOSEN TUESDAY Several Import'nt Items Taken Up By City Board C. D. Liske, assistant secretary at Patterson Mills Co., was appoint ed Commissioner of the city of Roanoke Rapids at a regular ad journed meeting of the Board of Commissioners Tuesday of this week. Mr. Liske was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the death of the late Commissioner John C. Smith. The newly elected Com missioner will take up his duties immediately, to serve until next electioii. Mr. Liske came to Roanoke Rap ids in 1927 from Raleigh and has been connected with the Patterson Mill since that time. He has CLYDE D. LISKE been an outstanding leader in the civic work of the city during his twelve years of residence here, at the present time serving as secre tary and treasurer of the local Red Cross Chapter, director of the Roa noke Rapids Building and Loan, a steward of the Roanoke Rapids Methodist Church, secretary of the Kiwanis Club, Chief Saginaw of the Scout Masters’ Club, Troop Com mitteeman of Troop 148, assistant master of Troop 146, and a com mitteeman of the Cub Pack. Several other important items came before the Board at the Tuesday meeting. A resolution of respect and sym pathy was introduced and passed in connection with the death of the late Commissioner John C. Smith. The resolution appears be low. A letter from Dr. M. C.
